Vent: RPI is really annoying me...

I live RIGHT near the RPI president's house.  There was news today in the TU about what they are planning to do -- they are going to rebuild the house and make it HUGE (9000 sf) and use it for entertaining. I am so irritated.  They plan to tear down a perfectly beautiful historic (4500 sf) house and then build a 2 story brick monstrosity that is not going to fit with the neighborhood.  It'll look like part of campus.  And they are going to have more people there for "institutional" purposes, which means more traffic and maybe a view of a parking lot etc for us.  I am going to be at EVERY public meeting about this.  Argh!  The sad part is the current houses that are on the 2 properties there could be restored and upgraded and they are so nice.  Typical RPI... they also own the old Proctor's theater in downtown Troy and instead of rehabbing that and revitalizing downtown they built EMPAC.  Oy.

Re: Vent: RPI is really annoying me...

  • I am very upset. They should not tear down a historic home to put up a new building that is what is wrong with our country. We can't use something that is already there and in decent working order but rather build new and destroy history. So sad.

  • I was so disgusted when I heard they were going to build a humongous house because the other one "wasn't big enough". I've been by the president's house. It's enormous and absolutely beautiful! They call it a move for the future - I see it as stroking someone's ego. Blech.
  • Ugh - that's terrible. I love historic buildings/homes and agree that restoring/rennovating would be better than removing. At Plattsburgh, the president's house is an older home and while the layout is cut up as most older homes were, part of the fun of attending events was the charm of the place, not how large and sterile it was. Boo.
  • Well ladies, DH and I are doing something about it.  There's a public meeting this week so today we are going door to door to motivate the neighbors to show up.  As it turns out, the project that got turned down would have been a HUGE building that would have been RIGHT across the street from us rather than down a couple of doors and set back. PHEW for the zoning board rejecting it.. but that was way too close a call!

And, as it turns out, my comment on the TU blog caught the interest of the reporter and I was in yesterday's paper!   I'll see what they present on Tuesday.  If it stinks, I'm going to start a campaign for something more sensible.  If they are going to build something, they'd better make it so it's well hidden and doesn't cause a problem for neighbors.

  • I'm glad it isn't that 6 story monstrosity they originally planned, but agree- that tastefully redoing the current President's home (which I think is beautiful) is FAR better than building a new EgoMansion. I also thought, originally, that they were keeping the current house as "guest quarters" and not tearing it down (although, why do you need guest quarters when you have 9000 sq. ft. and 9 bedrooms?)

The funny thing is- when my brother-in-law (a professor at Princeton) would go to speak at RPI- his alma mater- they didn't house him ANYWHERE, he'd have to stay with us at the Manor. Wouldn't you think special visiting presenters would be PRIME candidates for staying at the president's home, since the presentations these visitors give brings in huge publicity for RPI? NAH- just let them stay on someone's couch, since they're not donating millions of $$$.
