Passport/Name Change question

Hey ladies!  This is a different name change question...  (I think)

Kind of a random/silly question: for those of you that changed your name on your US passport, when you received your new passport was your passport expiration date 10 years from the month you renewed your new passport or was it your original passport expiration date?  I only ask cause I haven't changed my name yet & MH has to renew his passport. (he just realized his expired recently)  Mine is still good for another 5 years but I know I'm going to have to get a new one eventually.  I haven't changed my name yet and was going to do it after our trip to Walt Disney World this June... but I thought it would be kind of cool if our passports could expire at the same time so it would be easier to remember when to renew.  (I know... I'm weirdConfused)  Were planning to book our trip this week so I'm just trying to see if I should book under my married name or not...

And I know this has been asked a gazillion times, but how long did it take to get your new SS card, DL, etc?  (Can't find the old posts on it)  Do I need to get one before I can get the other?  Do I need to get both of these back before I can apply for a new passoprt?  TIA!

Re: Passport/Name Change question

  • I just received my passport a few weeks ago after changing my name. It is good until Feb. 2020. It took about a month to get back and I chose not to pay the extra money to expedite it. I didn't need it until May. FYI they mail your marriage license back to you about a week after the passport. I freaked out when I got my passport back without it, since it was the only certified one I had.

Social Security is where I started. I live in Florida and you can't change name on DL without it. It only took about 10 days to get back.  DL they changed on the spot at DMV.

I'm still trying to get name changed on credit cards, Dr. offices, subscriptions, etc. I have done all the important stuff now I am trying to just switch everything as it comes up.

     Good Luck!

  • The passport will be good 10 years from now.  The date is calculated from re-issue.  I think I had my passport back in about 4 weeks and didn't pay to expedite.  I actually got my marriage certificate and old passport back before the new one came.

SS card I got in about a week, DL about the same.  And no, you don't need to do one before the other.  I started with SS, the DL, then passport a couple months later.
