Couch: WWYD?
ladies, I need some advice. we bought a couch we really love from an antique store in Mass at an incredibly cheap price about 3 years ago. it's held up really well since then despite having lots of use. But now the seat cushions are starting to get worn and are looking very ready to be replaced; last night a small stain was added to one of them.
Tim loooooves this couch and wants to keep it; but I really am not going to be able to deal with it in its current state much longer. I would be happy just to get a basic sofa bed from Ikea (it would be nice to have a sofa bed for guests' use) but he really is against this idea. i love our current couch too but the idea of undertaking some kind of reupholstering project, while i love DIY stuff, sounds rather intimidating. i know how expensive reupholstering can be and we don't want to pay to have it professionally reupholstered. i'm thinking about just doing the cushions to start since the main fabric on the frame is still in ok shape - it's mostly the cushion fabric that needs redoing.
has anyone done any reupholstering and have advice to share? am i crazy to take this on?

There are places in Toronto (so I assume there are some in NY too) that will create custom slip covers for sofas... would that be an option?
Reupholstering can be tricky - are there any strange angles or piping that you'll need to tackle?

yeah, slipcovering is not really an option since the couch has a high carved back.
reupholstering the body would be a huge project that would take me a while to tackle, if i do reupholster i would start just with the three seat cushions then go from there.

well, I found a nice throw (wedding present we never had use for until now!) to put over them for the time being and the couch looks MUCH better already.
I'm going to think about fabrics this week and maybe try my hand at the cushions next weekend. i was really inspired by this woman:

That is inspiring! I'd be so nervous about re-upholstering those back sections. I kinda wish she'd left the wood the original color though - the white is nice and modern, but it was such a lovely old antique.
wow, that's amazing. I would have no idea where to even begin! but i kind of agree with lisa - it seems a bit of a shame to paint over wood from the 1800's...
it does look fabulous now though!!
and sorry, i have nothing to add re upholstering, but my friends have redone some armchairs, and they look *great*. so I think it just depends on the shape of the couch...beware though, that nice upholstery fabric is really expensive! I think they spent roughly $60 for fabric for one of the armchairs - so a three-seater is probably much more...
