I had posted about two weeks ago regarding a vacation to Myrtle Beach/Charleston DH and I are planning for this summer.
After a lot of research we're thinking of spending most of our trip in Charleston, stay in Charleston, and possibly visit Folly beach near there, or ride up the coast to Myrtle one day.
We think we've settled on a hotel. ( The Francis Marion) We can get a deal there, and it's in the midst of everything in Charleston, so we're thinking of booking. Does anyone think this is a bad idea? If so, why?
Additionally, what can you tell me about Folly Beach?
Lastly, if you were going to tell me the most important things to do while in Charleston, what would those things be? I want to make sure I don't miss anything!
Re: Charleston Information
You can't go wrong with the Francis Marion!
If you like history, I'd do a walking tour- there are tons of companies who do them around the market area. The Slave Museum (Ryan's Mart) and Magnolia Plantation are decent. One of my fave tours was the Aiken Rhett House. It is downtown- you can walk there easily from the hotel.
We were just on King St. last night so I am trying to remember specifically what is there- it's where all the shopping and there are some good bars and restaurants there. I also like East Bay Street for restaurants. Jestine's is a fave too- it's cheap and popular, so prepare to wait.It is on Meeting Street, about 3 blocks from the market.
We just explored Folly last weekend, we had lunch there and walked around. It's a young area, IMO. One group of friends I hang out with- they ALL live on James Island and hang out there. It just doesn't appeal to me at all for some reason.
Have fun planning and let me know if you have more questions.
East Bay is great for restaurants! Cypress is great, but pricey. I've also heard great things about Hank's Seafood. That's next on our places to try. Sermet's on King Street is really good, and the Kickin Chicken is great for lunch. There's also a really good Gelato place- I think it's on the corner of Calhoun and St. George.
Southern Living did a feature on Charleston this month, so if you see a magazine, you might want to check it out. Have fun!

Thanks for your input. I got the Southern Living mag last week, and that's how I researched hotels and found the Francis Marion. I'm getting super excited. DH was born in SC and lived there for the first 8 years of his life, prior to coming to MD. We're going to stop in Marion (where he had lived) and see his old house and take a picture of it.
Of the things we're planning, I was thinking I'd like to do a culinary tour, a carriage ride, visit Boone Plantation, and just sight see. I'm so stoked! DH is a history teacher who knows so much about the history of the south and the Civil War, so I think we'll have a great time.
Oh, and as for Folly Beach, I LOVE the beach and felt like I really wanted to spend a little time at the beach this summer, so we might just spend a day in Myrtle instead. I normally go to OC Maryland, which is super touristy and annoying.
I think you'll find myrtle beach to be much more touristy and annoying than Folly. I like the vibe on Folly, very laid back surfer culture. Great location choice for the hotel, you're right in the mix of things downtown. Hank's is our favorite restaurant, have a drink/apps at the Rooftop bar at Vendue Inn - which is right near Waterfront park. Have fun!
Ditto pp. Folly is very laid back and Myrtle is touristy and annoying. My absolute favorite beach in SC is Sullivan's Island with Isle of Palms at a close 2nd. Try brunch at Poogan's Porch or High Cotton, lunch at S.N.O.B. and dinner at 82 Queen. Other favs are Poe's and Hometeam BBQ on Sullivan's. Try the pizza at Giuseppi's or Mellow Mushroom and southern fare at Jestine's or Magnolia's/Blossom. Get a cupcake at Cupcake on King St. Boone Hall is my favorite plantation and the gardens at Magnolia Plantation are beautiful. A carriage ride is a fun way to see part of the city/hear some history. The ghost walks are also fun. I definitely want to do a culinary tour in the future. Have fun!
Love Isle of Palms. Super laid back and relaxing. Folly is nice, and not as crowded as Myrtle. But if you're looking for things to do like mini golf and fun shopping/eating, take the 2 or so hr drive to Myrtle. Cypress Gardens is awesome. You can row a boat through swamps filled with cypress trees and see alligators in the waters. SO AMAZING and not expensive at all! GL and have fun!
