*** Lori - re AngelCare monitor ***

Which monitor do you have? The older style one (this one - this is what it looks like out of the box, but with only one parent unit) or the new model (this)?

I'm curious if there's really a big difference between them, other than the fancy display on the parent unit and the older one only having 2 channels vs 8. From what I can tell, other than that they're the same, and I could afford two of the older model vs two of the newer ($180 vs $240).

The other option I'm looking at is this video monitor - the benefit of this one is that instead of having to buy a second entire monitor, I can just get an additional camera and set it up on another channel (there are a couple other brands that you can do this with, but this one gets the best reviews for performance). That would run $217 for the unit + the extra camera, so it's still on the higher side but cheaper than two of the new AngelCare models.

I guess it really depends on if we want video or movement. A common complaint about the AngelCare is that wind (like a fan or an open window) can muck with the sensor, which would be bad for us - our bedrooms are not air conditioned, so in warm weather we HAVE to have fans blowing. Since we're coming into winter here, it won't be a problem until Oct/Nov, but I'd still hate to spend that much money on something and then have to stop using it. Sad

This is the one we have...it was $89 at BRU...we didn't go for the pricier one since our house is small and we already have a room thermometer in the nursery (on a clock)...the main thing we wanted was the sound and movement monitoring...and it offers the option of just sound or sound/movement...I chose movement rather than video because what you're LOOKING for on the video is to see if the baby is breathing which the movement monitor takes care of without you having to look.  does that make sense?

That said, we've only used the crib for naps so the monitoring is only used when we're awake....we've yet to use it when we're also sleeping.

  • Butting in, hope you don't mind :)

Lisa - we have the older version of the AngelCare monitor and this video monitor.  If you can swing both, I would highly recommend it.

The AngelCare monitor has given us a lot of piece of mind (especially me).  We have a ceiling fan, a humidifer that is on every night and occasionally a space heater in SP's room and have not had a problem with sensor going off.  My biggest problem was that I would forget to turn it off when I took SP out of the crib and it would go off, scaring me half to death at 3am :)

I cannot say enough about the video monitor, it's my fave baby item along with the Itzbeen timer.  I like the model we have because the screens are SO small on those hand-held units.  I like the 7" screen, we call it SP TV.  We just move it back and forth between our bedroom and the living room, not a big deal at all.  We also have two cameras hooked up to it, one is pointing at SP's crib and the other just generally in his room so we can see him when he runs in there to play.  SP has been in his crib since day one and I couldn't imagine not seeing him at all times - I would have constantly gone in his room to check on him.

Anyhoo, that's my two cents.  I'd def go video over AngelCare if you had to choose (I think we only used the AngelCare for a couple months, only after he learned to rolled over...until then, he was swaddled him like a burrito and didn't move).

Unfortunately with our budget, it's either one or the other.  Sad I'm a bit torn between the types...on the one hand, the Angelcare seems like such a good idea, but on the other hand, we'd get a lot more use (in the future) out of the video.

Oh, and I'm really interested to hear that you like the Itzbeen timer - one of Ben's cousins said she wanted to get us two of them as a gift, and I'd never heard of them before she mentioned them. They seem very cool though!

  • Oh yeah, accept those Itzbeen timers, you will love them especially with two!  That little gadget made it so easy to keep track of everything.  In the beginning, we shared care as much as possible between myself, Dan and my mom.  In the hospital, I kept track of my pain meds with the last "extra" button :)

We made sure that the Itzbeen was always kept in the same place so we didn't have to look for it (on the changing table in SP's room and a specific table in our living room when we were out).

Then when we started using a sitter everyday (I work from home so need someone to come watch SP), it was seemless so she knew the last feeding, diaper change, etc.).

  • I really wish we would have had an itzbeen timer.  I was to foggy headed in the beginning that I couldn't keep track of anything.  Even now I have a hard time remembering when I fed last (it's like you get sucked into a baby time warp).

We have an angel care monitor...  in retrospect I would have preferred one with a video monitor.
