Painting tips

Hey ladies

I am fixing to take on the master under taking of painting the inside of my house.  It is builder's beige right now and I want that gone.  We were going to hire it painted but decided that we could save a little bit on doing it ourselves.  So what's your tips?  I've only painted our master bath (we did that after we moved in last year) so I'm relatively new to this.

Post your helpful tips please! :)

Re: Painting tips

  • lady...if you have tackled a bathroom...then you can paint ANY room....i hate painting bathrooms!!! ugh

no real tips....but just be patient! buy decent brushes and rollers (although, i don't always follow this tip...LOL)....prime if you need to (although, with builders beige, you should be fine to just do a double coat over it....)

and just tape everything up real good! i usually cut the room first (like do all the areas around the ceiling and baseboards first...get that over with....torture!) and then just get to rolling!

also, take down anything that might get in the way of your painting (like switch and outlet covers, blinds (if you don't have fancy picture windows or whatever...LOL) and etc). and tape the screws to those various fixture and outlet covers because i have lost about a million of them... LOL :)

  • good quality paint and good quality brushes - I like my purdy 2" angled brush.  I don't need to tape stuff off if I use the angled brush and cut in everything.

Also - don't try to spread the paint too thin... instead of applying the paint, you'll end up just spreading too thin of a coat and you'll have spots (DH is awful about doing this!!!)

For paint, I definitely prefer Lowe's brand paint vs Home Depot - or better yet Benjamin Moore.

  • oh and I would go for an eggshell finish - it's not shiny but it gives it a better surface to wash - the builder's paint is usually flat paint and it doesn't wash very easily :(

  • Lauren gotcha covered...only thing I can add is just have patience and take the time to do the job right.
  • I am also agreeing with Lauren ;)  Since this is only the second time you have painted....I would go with taping off everything.  That way it seriously decreases the chances of mistakes!  The blue 3M painters tape is a life saver!

In our house most of our paint is Ralph Lauren....or Behr.  I have bought other brands before....but those are the best..cost friendly paints that I have used!  We used flat paint in just about every room (except the bathrooms).  It is so much easier to work with than some of the other finishes...and if you get little smudges or scratches...they are easy to cover over!  I would spend just a few bucks more and buy good quality brushes and rollers.  It will pay off in the end.

Good luck with all the new colors....and post us some pics when you guys are finished :)

  • LOL...yeah i didn't even think of paint brands and finishes and such... HA!

i second behr paints for money friendly paint...it is really the only paint i have worked with, but i like their colors and selection....and most importantly, their price!

and like heather...we have mostly stuck with flat paint with the expection of our guest bathroom and we did a flat satin in there because there were some imperfections in the wall that we weren't sure we could totally mask...and the flat paint really helps to hide those....so, that is what has worked for us.

  • I just wanted to add to make sure you start with really clean walls.  I always take a pillow case and put it on a broom or something and make sure all walls are free of dirt and junk.  NOT that your house is dirty :)

  • oh yah.....to get all of those little spider webs that you don't ever notice...until you paint over them...lol!

  • haha.....Dh had a big football gathering Saturday night and I am a clean freak.  I was looking around or doing something and saw a cob web in the corner of one of our rooms.  I about died thinking if somebody saw that they are going to think my house is dirty :)
