Moving Drama

We moved everything into the new apt. this weekend only to move it all again in the next week or so.  We brought up the last load and started wiping down shelves in the kitchen.  My friend opened a cupboard above the stove and found equipment/utensils that could be used for making a handfull of illegal drugs.  That explains why the stove was just replaced.

So, needless to say, we are not staying there.  We talked to the property manager and based on our conversations and observations, we're thinking it is isolated to this one apt but there is no way we can stay in that unit.  So we are moving to the other building asap.  DH and I are dumbfounded.  The caretaker said she did not check every cupboard and feels horrible.  So far we know they are giving us the other apt and she is going to talk to the owner today to see if they will give us a discount on our rent for next month.

We're in shock.  And exhausted.  3rd floor with no elevator and less than 15 min. after we bring the last items in.  But at least we found it and can get out before we unpack everything.  It's going to be a long week.

Re: Moving Drama

  • That is so frightening!  Did the owner replace the stove?  As in, they knew what was going on?
  • Did you ask them to pay for movers? You guys shouldn't have to. They messed up (and worse, admitted to it!).  That is awful. I can't believe that happened!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I'm not trying to come off rude (I've never done drugs, and don't know much about them)...

So, you're not going to stay at the new place, b/c the previous tenet did/made drugs there?  Am I missing something?  I don't see why it would be a big deal, given the place was cleaned up top to bottom.

Please excuse my dum-dum-ness in this post. Huh?

  • If the apt was used to make meth, for example, fumes would linger. And those fumes are harmful, especially for someone preggo. If it was used to make powdery drugs, residue, again, could linger. And again, bad for someone pregnant.

And there is also the risk that buyers come back not knowing the supplier has moved. That could = dangerous situation for new tenant.

i thought i had it bad moving during a snowstorm, but at least we don't have to move again. Hope you can get the landlord to credit you for your troubles.

Exactly.  And meth is what we are pretty sure it was.  And to be honest, it wasn't cleaned that well because there were items in many cupboards.  We were going through wiping everything down because it just looked a little dirty.  They replaced the stove because they knew it was damaged beyond repair but I don't think they knew what caused the damage.  The previous tenant moved in before the current caretaker was hired and they've been out for a while before officially giving notice.

  • Wow, I am so sorry you had to go through that. I also think you should ask for moving expenses. It's not cheap to rent a U-Haul or pay for storage. Where are you staying until the new place is ready?

They have offered to let us switch buildings (with no charge of course) so we are taking an apt over there.  We've met some of the other neighbors and checked police reports for the building and everything suggests this is an isolated situation.  We will also be directly above the caretaker in an apt formerly occupied by a family so it is somewhat comforting.  It is ready now and we have the keys so we are moving stuff over there as quickly as schedules and help will allow.  We are waiting to see what their initial offer is for reduced rent and hopefully it will cover movers for at least the furniture.

  • Oh geez.  I cannot imagine the frustration and not to mention how scary that is!

I agree with Leigha on all of this!!

oh my gosh, so sorry you had to deal with this. The complex needs to move you. You do not need to be living in a meth lab--no matter how recently people were there using it as such. ESPECIALLY being with child. No, actually--you need some sort of compensation. I would threaten an attorney. That is BS if the complex knew about it and still wanted to move a pregnant woman into that unit. Oh, and not to mention the danger that the entire building could burst into flames at any given moment as a result of inaccurate meth mixing. Wonderful.

Good luck getting this all sorted out, I am pissed for you!
