MT, I fully expect you to know the answer to this.
So that guy wrecked into my fence the other night. Cop gave us a card with a file number on it, his name and the phone number to the traffic department. Told MrShoe to call on Monday to get the insurance information.
I called the sheriff's office this morning. They told me to call my homeowner's insurance and give them the file number, they'll handle it from there. That made me nervous about a claim being filed against me so I called my homeowner's insurance agent.
He told me NOT to call my homeowner's insurance company but to call the other guys insurance company (I don't have that information) because if I call my insurance, they will file the claim on my policy. Instead he told me to call the police office and file my own report and then call the other guys insurance company.
I don't know what to do. I just want my fence fixed and not have to pay for it.
Re: Insurance question
Shoe- The Sheriff's office should and can give you the guys insurance information. So that you can contact them to get the fence fixed.
I dont know about your home owners insurance but sometimes your agent can put pressure on the other guys insurance to get it fix without you filing a claim. My agent does that but not all of them do.
Hope this helps a little.
Nikki is right the Sherriff's office will give you the full report, but it takes 7-10 days to come in. That's why a lot of people will file through their own company first. If you know someone, or know someone who knows someone in the sherriff's office then they can usually get the info for you before the official report comes out.
Did you get the guy's name and number?
No, he was sitting in the cop car the whole time and MH only talked to the officer. They did tell me that it would take 7-10 days but that I would have to pay for a report. The damage isn't bad at all so I have no problem waiting. No way am I filing a claim with my homeowner's.
So should I wait until next week and call back? Or call and file my own report like my agent suggested?
You will have to pay for the report but it is a very minimal amount. I dont think it is more than $35ish dollars.
If the damage is not that bad and can wait till next week I would wait and not file a claim on your insurance. I would wait till you get the guys info.
ps. Jenn has friends in the Sheriff's office.. i dunno maybe she can work her magic and get the report for free or maybe even sooner than next week...
Is there anyway around that? That's crap; I don't want to pay $35 for a report that I need b/c this joker crashed into my fence.
No.. MT thinks the price is a lot lower than $35 i cant remember exactly what the price was but I do know its not more than $35.. The only way around it is if you can get someone in the Sheriff's office to give you the info.
