Teacher/Job advice?

I need some serious advice ladies...

I really hoped it wouldn't come to this but I have been officially told  that my district will not renew my contract for next year... I have only been teaching for this school year (subbed in this district last year). I have had an awful principal who decided last fall that she did not like me and did everything in her power to make me look bad :( Regardless of the fact that I did everything she asked me to do, and the fact that my students and parents are happy, HR is sticking behind this principal and choosing  to let me go...

So here's the decision I have to make before Thursday:

1) Resign; they are offering to give me a good reference and letter of recommendation if I agree to resign, but I would then forfeit any rights to benefits

2) Refuse to Resign and they will start the non-renewal process (which equates to being fired without just cause) and I would still be eligible for limited benefits and unemployment

The fact is that I have not done anything wrong and have worked extremely hard to do my job to the best of my ability... so I feel like resigning is admitting failure... However I plan to apply to other districts and really hope that this does not end my teaching career :(

What would you do??? Teachers, have you known anyone this has happened to???

TIA for any and all advice!

Re: Teacher/Job advice?

  • Ugh, I am sorry that you are going through this.  My mom had a parent from h*ll in a special education classroom that got her into the same situation that you are now in.  Like you, my mom was doing her job.  My mom took the resignation route.  It did end up really hurting her in the city.  After she resigned the parent from h*ll went on the news and complained about my mom's teaching and the principal.  In the end, my mom was able to teach for lower pay at a private school.  Sadly, the parent from h*ll went on the news for the next two years about her son's new teachers and principals.  All the teachers had the same reccomendation as my mom.  :(  That woman ruined a lot of careers with her craziness.

I hope that your principal is more professional than my mom's crazy situation.  Do you need the money from the benefits?  If you don't need the money, then I would probably resign.  I think being fired would hurt you more.

  • I think I agree with the last post - if you can financially handle resigning, I would go that route.

I'm sorry your principal is being unfair.

  • I think I would refuse to resign if you need the unemployment and benefits. I am so sorry you are dealing with this (((hugs)))

  • This would have happened to me if we would have stayed in WA last year.  The principal did everything to make me look bad and I did nothing wrong.  I can feel your pain.  I would take the unemployment and go else where.  It is not worth working for a principal like that.
  • I agree with taking the resignation route. I am so sorry this is happening to you. It seems like districts are not backing their teachers anymore and it is bordering ridiculous. I hope you can find a job that respects you and thinks you're an asset to the building. Keep your chin up!
  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I'm still so torn about what to do...

The union tells me what an awful principal she is and how she's done this to other teachers... however the others have been tenured and she could not do as much damage to them.

The problem is we bought our home and plan on staying here, and it's a rural area so the other districts are at least 30-45min away, plus this is such a huge blemish on my record... it's hard to see how another school will hire me after being let go from the largest district in the area :(

We could survive without the unemployment ( if I found some part-time work), but is it really worth it to resign? I feel like any other school would know what it really means anyway...  and I would have given up my benefits for nothing...
