BR- baby crack machine?

I hear so much about this so I looked up on amazon what it is. Does this have any features that a radio between stations (white noise) or my iPod stocked w/different sounds (heart beat, gentle rain, etc) doesn't have?We have a small radio/cd player as well as an extra iPod & speakers for LO's room. We should be okay right? (we also have a hair dryer Lori Big Smile)

What about this Fisher Price Sea Horse? Some people say it works wonders. Your thoughts?

Re: BR- baby crack machine?

  • I'm curious about this as well, since I'm planning on going the cheapy route with an iPod too. Smile
  • We just used an iPod, you can download white noise for free from here.  I made a playlist with an hour's worth of this little sound clip and then set the iPod to repeat. We had two little computer speakers in the corner's of SP's crib (that we took out once he rolled over).  It worked like a charm.

We also have used a humidifer every night since day one and now it works as great white noise.

  • Sadly, neither white noise nor the seahorse work for us. I'm looking for a miracle.

  • i saw both over on 0-3 and wondered if they work?  we use  my iphone too.
  • I have it and have used it in Maya's room for the past 3-4 mths.

It's ok...I got mine 2nd hand and unfortunately the 'slide; in it whirs a little loudly sometimes.

The slide is for the little light show; there are three slides altogether. There's a 'Moon & Stars' one, an 'Under The Sea' one and...I can't think of what the other one is off the top of my head (sorry lol). We just leave the 'Moon and Stars' one in there as Maya loves that one.

She loves watching the moons and stars flow by on her ceiling, more so than the noise. It's relaxing for her. I have yet to play it for Samara but I have heard that babies tend to love the slideshow more than the noise.

    HTH!

  • There is also a free white noise app for the iphone.  We use "white noise lite".  It has several different noises to choose from including the static one.  DS can take it or leave it, but we usually put it on anyway.  He stays in our room for now, and I've learned that white noise kind of drives me up a wall.  Luckily the monitor we have doesn't transmit the white noise, so at least we don't have to hear it when he goes to bed before us.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Sounds like the only thing we're missing then is the slideshow thing for the ceiling. Thanks for the tip on where to download for free btw!
  • We just have a Dex Sound Sleeper Machine not the "official" baby crack machine with the ceiling slide show.  I like this one because it's small enough we can take it with us when we travel and it can run on batteries or AC.  We do hear it on the monitor if there's no other noise in the room we're in...

As for the baby crack machine, can infants even see the slideshow?  I dunno.  Of course older babies and toddlers will be able to see it.  That siad, we did get a Twillight Turtle and use that as well.  I like that I can select from the three different colors...I mainly use the blue one at night...it gives enough glow to nurse/change her without turning on the lamp (we have a regular nightlight in the room too...it's part of her lamp).  I don't know about the seahorse...I see the 0-3 mommies raving about it, but I am not sure what it does exactly.  Do the babies sleep with it?  The Twilight Turtle is plush with a hard plastic shell that the lights shine through.  I don't put it in her bed though, it's on a table next to the bed.

That said, CDs of white noise, finding an "in between" station on the radio, running a fan, blow dryer, vaccuum...they all do the same thing for the baby.  The more portable, the better since then you can use it anytime, anyplace (iPod would be great)!

Oddly enough, what's working for us the best is swaddle + 5 S's I listed below...I do like hearing "ocean" on the sound machine...it calms me down as does the soft blue glow from the Twillight Turtle.  What calms Libby the most is being swaddled, on her side, jiggled and shushed.  J's doing it right now...in less than 2 minutes she's OUT!  And she's learning to fall asleep without nursing, which is important to us.

  • The only thing the baby crack machine has that an iPod doesn't is little disks that spin and project on the ceiling or wall of fish (and something else). We never use that...we just use it as a sound machine (and we only use one sound), so I vote for using what you already have. We've always used ocean wave sounds to calm him and now he can barely keep his eyes open if he hears that sound.
  • So here's the Fisher Price Seahorse:

    • The Ocean Wonders Soothe & Glow Seahorse is a wonderful nightime friend for baby
    • When he is cuddled, his belly gently glows and he plays over 5 minutes of music and ocean sounds
    • The music is comprised of 8 gentle lullabyes and classical selections, along with soothing sounds of the sea (2 ocean tracks)
    • After 5 minutes, the sounds and lights will gently fade out so as not to disturb baby
    • Perfectly sized for baby to hug, the Soothe & Glow seahorse is a soft & cuddly addtion to any crib Mom can choose low or high volume or turn off altogether

I like that the baby can initiate it's glow/sounds...and that the volume can be regulated.  Seems to me that this toy would be better for a baby and not an infant or newborn though.  If used for a new baby it would have to be turned on by an adult since the baby is too small to snuggle/squeeze it.  I can see getting this for Libby in a few months though...especially since we have lots of travels planned for this summer and this would be a nice "normalizer" for her.

Cloud b also has nice sound/soothe embedded toys...they're the ones that make Twillight Turtle...they also have Dozy Dolphin, Gentle Giraffe and Sleep Sheep that makes white noise and you can choose for it to play for 23 or 45 minutes.

someone from DH's office got us the Dozy Dolphin - it never crossed my mind to get something like this but we love it.  I don't think Jack would HAVE to have it to calm down and sleep, but when we are ready for bed I make sure he is full, changed, and somewhat calm (swaddled and sush'd while walking around for a few mins) and then put him in the co-sleeper with the dolphin on sleep (a gentle wave sound) while I do my nighttime routine.  Most nights he is out or at least fighting heavy eyelids by the time I am done.  I like that it can go for 23 or 45 mins. b/c that is long enough for him to for sure be out and since it puts me to sleep too I don't have to worry about making sure it shuts off.

we have the twilight turtle too but haven't really used it regularly.  DH did turn it on and rotate it around for a while one night and Jack was in awe so I can see how light shows or whatever it is that the other thing has would be great for a baby.  I'm not sure how that works as a relaxing thing b/c Jack was wide awake and just kept his eyes glued to the stars but it was really cute to watch.

  • I have the Sleep Sheep. Some of my mom friends SWEAR by it and call it the baby crack machine. I have not noticed anything. Alexa doesn't care if it's on or off. I always put it on at bedtime. But I think now that it's more for my benefit... She sleeps the same with or without it.

  • of course, then there are the times when nothing works - well, these things will all work on YOU since you are so tired by that point, but the baby couldn't care less! LOL

We found the Sleep Sheep to be invaluable in the beginning, but not so much anymore.. although it can put me out in a minute.  The Lullaby CD and DVD from Baby Einstein does nothing for my child.  We have the turtle that glows stars from its shell, but he only likes it when I move it around.  Maybe I will have to try the baby crack machine.  He's much more into visual things now than he used to be.
