Moving to Austin from Mississippi

Hey guys! My husband and I are moving to Austin, TX from Mississippi.  We're moving for better opportunities job wise and school wise, so we're very much looking forward to this.

My question is, what are your suggestions for Austin?  I'd like to know about the neighborhoods, what there is to do, what you love, what you hate, anything!

Thanks, KarenCool

Re: Moving to Austin from Mississippi

  • Hello! You are going to love Austin! As far as neighborhood suggestions, do you know what area of town you are going to work? Traffic here can be a nightmare, so proxomity to your job may be one of your priorities. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is your target housing budget?
  • Welcome!  Austin is a great city.  Personally, I'm partial to South Austin and love the neighborhoods in the 78704 area as well as down in 78749, 78748, 78739 (Oak Hill, Circle C, Slaughter/Brodie areas.)

There are girls who rave equally about North Austin, but I'm less familiar with that part of town.  Location will depend on your jobs because the worst thing about Austin is the traffic. With only two major cross town (North-South) thorough fares (MoPac and IH-35) it can get super hairy.

Austin has a really great music/club scene. Great restaurants and fabulous Mexican/Tex-Mex, BBQ, and Austin eats.  It's also very outdoor friendly with a huge park downtown (Zilker) as well as miles of urban hike & bike trails.  Since Austin is on the edge of the Texas hill country, it's super easy to take day trips for hiking, tubing, camping, or small town visits.

The people are friendly and welcoming.  I think you and your DH will love it here!

  • We live in the Milwood neighborhood near the Mopac Expressway and Parmer Blvd.  We like it there a lot.  The homes are typically 70s and 80s builds, are affordable, and there are lots of different sizes and floor plans.  I understand the elementary school (Summit) near us is good too.  It's easy to get downtown or pretty much to go in any direction with or without toll roads.  It's also close to the Domain and Arboretum areas.
  • Congrats! I lived in Austin until I was 18, now I'm stuck in College Station (a couple of hours away).

I am so jealous you are moving to Austin :P

Anyway, it depends on where you will be working, as a PP said the traffic is horrific so you will want to take that into account.

I wish we knew where you were moving, it would help us suggest neighborhoods.

I went to high school at McNeil High so I had many friends who lived in Milwood and so I can agree that it is a great neighborhood. Very family oriented and located near to some major highways.

There is so much to do in Austin! If you are on facebook, there is a page called 365 Things to do in Austin you can look at to get an idea of what there is to offer.

Here are a few other useful links:

    Austintexas.org

City website  (although chances are you may not end up in Austin proper, still a good resource)

Austin 360 (entertainment guide, what's going on in ATX)

Austin Citysearch (has message boards to ask others about the area)

Hope this helps, and again I hope you're ask excited about moving to Austin as I am for you haha!

  • Hi Karen! Austin is such a great city, people are so laid back and friendly. Ive lived south most of my life but work all over and there are great neighborhoods allover, including school districts etc.
There are many master planned communities as well as older neighborhoods that have just built up over the years. If you are wanting a more private home/neighborhood there are some very cute towns/subdivisions just outside of austin as well.

If you want any more detailed info on housing you can email me at findyour wayhomeinaustin at gmail dot com.

     Best wishes, Carisa

    Hey Karen

We moved here from Mississippi too.  You'll be surprised how many people there are from MS in Austin.
