Question about cooking w/ wine

DH and I don't really like to drink wine but we use it for cooking a lot. Because we don't drink it, we don't know much about it... well, actually, we don't know ANYTHING about it.

I have had a bottle of red wine in the fridge for MONTHS... it's been opened and is currenty corked. I need a red wine for a marinade I'm making tonight... am I able to use this even after a few months? I don't want to give us food poisoning :P

Google has some very conflicting answers... some say yes, others say no.

TIA! :)

Re: Question about cooking w/ wine

  • i don't think it'd poison you, but as far as wine that you drink ... it's really only good for a day or two after opened.
  • I'm not sure I would use it - I think the taste would be off.  You may want to look into buying those individual servings of wine (sometimes they are little bottles, sometimes they look like big juice boxes =)  That way you could use it for cooking, but wouldn't have a ton left over.
  • Thanks for the advice! :)

I will definitely look into those individual bottles for cooking... that sounds like a really good idea.

  • It wouldn't poison you, but I wouldn't drink or cook with it.
  • I wouldn't use it. . .it wouldn't taste good at all.

  • don't use it, have you ever taken a swig of a beer that had been out and open overnight? It's pretty similar in the disgusting factor, except times however many days its been open.

the cooking wine bottles are a lot smaller, I use those pretty fast.

  • Target has a really good selection of individual serving wines.  You may want to check those out.  They are packaged sort of like juice boxes.

This is what I sometimes do. Or, I buy the inexpensive wine from TJs so I don't feel bad if we don't end up using the entire bottle! I wouldn't use it- like KB said, it's really only good for a day or two after opening.
