From his press release on the bailout bill:
?When taxpayers are asked to take such an extraordinary step because of the irresponsibility of a relative few, it is not a cause for celebration. But this step is necessary. Now Washington has to show the same sense of urgency in dealing with the crisis facing Main Street and the middle class by passing an emergency economic stimulus plan that would create jobs by rebuilding our crumbing roads; shore up flagging state budgets to prevent drastic cuts in education and health care; and extend expiring unemployment insurance benefits for those who?ve lost their jobs in this downturn and cannot find new ones."

Re: Obama still wants a 2nd stimulus package
Ugh... I'm in a crappy enough mood I might just call someone at his campaign and yell at them.
Though, to be completely fair, this kind of stimulus sounds like the kind they should've done the first time, rather than just throw money at people.
YAY! Unity Horse first thing on a Monday!!!
I still need a new fence, though...

Lame.
But, I'm this close to paying off my credit cards, and that would do it. So I won't be turning it down or anything.
I'm going to put this in my No Candidate Is Perfect file. With an eyeroll from me.
Maybe only half an eyeroll. I'd by lying if I said we couldn't use the money, even though I understand this isn't the best way to get it. Sigh.
Not to be picky but this is still throwing money at people. The gov't doesn't need an extra bill to spend money on education/roads/healthcare/unemployment - i.e. everything that state gov'ts are responsible for. They already do that on a daily basis. They're experts on "trickle down" spending.
What a softball! If McCain doesn't knock this out of the park he deserves to get his ass kicked in November.
Agreed... and I might be confused. I thought a while back the "second" stimulus package was going to be or was talked about being different than the first in that they weren't going to just send checks to people like they previously did.
::bangs head against wall::
Good to see you, UH. You've been missed.

That's why this is so mind-boggling! We're about to commit another $1Trillion we don't have (that's the estimate, no matter what congress says about $700 billion or whatever) and still people think we haven't spent enough? This is on top of the $3 trillion budget they already have. When is enough enough? $10 trillion?
I do not agree with Obama on this one but I think McCain would have to tread pretty lightly on it. We all know the bailout is going to bail out the companies and little is being done to help the middle/lower class. So if McCain were to go after Obama for wanting to help the citizens with a stimulus package it could backfire on him. Giving the OBC another reason to say that he just wants to help those with deep pockets not the "middle class".
I honestly think it's gotten to the point where the numbers are so ridiculously high, people literally cannot comprehend what they mean. One billion is already an incredible amount to contemplate; one trillion is simply beyond comprehension. It's so abstract that it basically means nothing anymore.

The polls show most Americans despise this bailout bill. Obama is for it. But McCain wasn't, or isn't. He worked with the House Reps to get an alternative. That's why he can hit this out of the park. I would bet a large sum of money that Americans won't support a 2nd stimulus package. No way. Americans want responsible gov't and this is the most irresponsible policy I've heard at least a week - and I watched the debate.
TTT- I know what you mean about the numbers being too large to contemplate and I agree with you about that. But that's what makes this more scary. The gov't is spending so much we can't even wrap our brains around how huge they are? That isn't something that resonates with "main street," especially when we just had a stimulus package that did absolutely nothing for the economy.
I agree with this.

Here is McCain on This Week with George S. (9/28/08)
STEPHANOPOULOS: So Speaker Pelosi hopes to post the details of this deal on the Internet around noon today. Is this something you can be for?
MCCAIN: Again, I?d like to see the details, but hopefully yes. And the outlines that I have read of it, that this is something that all of us will swallow hard and go forward with. The option of doing nothing is simply not an acceptable option.
further in the transcript
MCCAIN: . . .And it wasn?t because of me that the House of -- Republicans in the House of Representatives got into the negotiating and bargaining, which was vital. It had to be bipartisan and bicameral. But they did it themselves. And I?m proud of the work that they did.. . .I?m going to be out working on it. I won?t claim a bit of credit

Third on this.
If he sells it the right way, ie, "This is money to help YOU, not Wall Street," he'll get support for it. People will see it as "money for me!" instead of as money that's putting our country FURTHER in debt.
Especially because of the point already brought up about how HUGE the debt is. The numbers we're hearing, trillions, billions, etc...it's too much to comprehend.
I agree-people love handouts from the government, regardless of their consequences. Since Obama is supporting this, McCain just needs to throw in "Your children's children will be bearing the burden of this bill" to get it through people's thick skulls here, imo.
normally I'd agree with you about people loving handouts. But I don't think that's the case now, not when the gov't is about to shell out another trillion dollars and not when the first econ stimulus package failed. Does anyone have polls on this?
I have a poll about wealth redistribution - which is exactly what the econ stimulus package is.

"When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today's consumer, Americans overwhelmingly -- by 84% to 13% -- prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans."
