This made me laugh

I'm a pretty frugal little cupcake and have done a lot of things in order to save money, but I draw the line at this. I have officially found the thing that I will not do in order to save money...especially since industrial TP is some seriously scratchy shiznit and my hiney likes quilted action. Stick out tongue

There's an longer explanation (with photos) of how they do this on her blog.

Would you do this to save money? I think I'd rather cut back elsewhere and keep the Charmin...

Re: This made me laugh

  • we buy the kirkland brand from costco and that's as frugal as I will get with TP.....that is one area I believe you should use as much as you need amd shouldn't cut back LOL
  • yeah - I have cut out a lot of our paper products but would draw the line at getting rid of TP.

although kind of related - with the amount of nasty pads I'm going through I wish I had cloth pads.  I forgot how yucky pads are (well actually how yucky a flow is, with my hormone issues I rarely got periods) and (TMI) how there is a yucky scent no matter what you do/how clean you are.  I just bought some 7th generation ones and hope they are better, but I really think cloth might be nice.

  • training your body to go #2 at work? people really do this? i'm actually not comfortable going #2 at work. i'm just ewww on that whole thing. there are many many other places i would pinch pennies on, but i'm like you...bring on the double/triple TP layers!

Yeah, I'm with you there. I'm a shy pooper. I will sit and squeeze it back until the bathroom is empty, no matter how long it takes.

  • This is insanity.  There's no way I would unroll gigantic industrial rolls of TP onto smaller rolls to save money, and I'm definitely not going to start peeing on reusable cloths.  Is that a thing now?  Like adult CDing?  THE STAINS!  THE STAINS!

  • Wow.  Just, wow.  Yeah, I try to save where I can, but I like my super-soft Charmin.  I'm not giving it up to save a few bucks....not worth it!

Down at the bottom of their post - hit "Quote" instead of "Reply". Smile

OMG this reminds me...someone I work with seriously needs more fiber in their diet or something. Every time I go in there and they're in a stall (the doors are a little high off the ground so you can see shoes, so I know who the person is and that it's the same person every time), I hear all of this straining and grunting. Kinda makes me want to leave a bran muffin or something on their desk.

  • No-o-o-o!!! No, no, no. I don't even know what she means by "family cloth" ... I thought that meant a family's Scottish kilt pattern. I can't bring myself to read her blog. Does she mean that they wipe themselves with fabric and then put it in the washer and dryer?!

(please let the answer be no)

    Indeedy it does.

Apparently they only use the cloth wipes for #1, not #2. The used cloths are put in a bin or something and then she does a load of washing with them once or twice a week (on their own, not chucked in with the rest of their clothes - there's a whole other post about this).

I guess it's no different from using cloth wipes on a baby, but for some reason it grosses me out WAY more.

I am a Frugalista but this is ridiculous...all to save $114?  Wow.  I'd rather cut back on something else to save that little amount of money.  Now, if by doing this she was saving $1500 or more a year, well then, I'd consider it...since you can have a nice getaway for that kind of coin!

  • OMG, this is hilarious.  I cannot believe the math that she has on her blog where she breaks down the costs.  She needs a good book, or a hobby, or...anything!  Oh wait, she has a hobby - ROLLING TP!  Indifferent
  • Hilarious! Seriously one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of. Training yourself to go #2 at work? Just.Not.Normal.
  • Oh wow. I do go at work sometimes but only because I need to. I still prefer to go at home and even though my work is "nice" enough to not have the super rough industrial TP, but actually quilted ones (although cheap quilted ones), it still doesn't beat my Cha-cha-cha-charmin! I'm not frugal at all when it comes to using TP. I also rather dish out more for quality tissues (I like Kleenex) than scratch up my nose with industrial tissues...

Gross! Who would want poo in their washing machine? I would kill the environment with the 10 loads of bleach that I would have to run after a load of poo-rags. If I were so poor that I couldn't afford TP, I would stop eating... so, I wouldn't have to poo. Think of all the money I would save! Tongue Tied

Of course not... but, that's almost as bad as her logic. I'm still in shock that someone is cutting up fabric to wipe feces to store until laundry day.

Have any of you seen the show Hoarders?

EDIT: Sorry, I thought you wrote that they use it for #2. While I should delete it, I think my horror over the thought should stay. I'll change my fast response to:  If I were so poor that I could not use a strip of TP to wipe my tinkle, I would shake it, shake it, shake it like a Polaroid picture.

ROTFLMAO!  Nancy, you're too funny!  FWIW we've been putting pee pee and poo poo in our washer every other day for over a month now that Libby is here!  But yeah, it's not adult pee and poop.

We do "family cloth" in the way that we don't really use paper towels much (we buy them but use them sparingly)...we use dish towels and wash cloths for most things that other people would run to the paper towels for...

Honestly, I could see using cloth to deal with pee (which, let's face it, is the majority of TP used by women, right?  I mean we pee WAY more than we poo each day).  But she's not really saving a ton of money (especially if you factor that some of her $114 "saved" is going towards the laundry costs of detergent, water, electricity, time spent rolling her other paper, etc.)  If it were to save paper/trees, then there might be some merit to it.

There's a BIG difference between being frugal and being cheap.  She's just being cheap.  If she really wanted to look into an alternative, why not install a bidet or something?
