I need cover letter tips!

Here's my problem...in the last 4 years I've worked for 4 different companies.  Gasp, right?  I had legit reasons for leaving every position, but how/should I address that in a cover letter?  Example:

In the past four years I have worked for four different companies.  This can be a disadvantage on my resume because it implies a lack of stability.  There are valid reasons why I moved on from each position.  The Financial Assistant role at Company 1 was eliminated as the company seized global opportunities in India.  My decision to relocate from Michigan to Texas made my position at Company 2 short-term.  I accepted a part-time temporary job at Company 3.  I left Company 4 when I moved again from Round Rock, TX to Temple, TX and decided to spend a year at home.

I imagine hiring managers rolling their eyes and becoming very bored with that story.  Any ideas?  Should I just leave it all out?

Re: I need cover letter tips!

  • I don't think I would give the whole story of why. When I first started working after grad school, my first job was 3 months, my second 6 months, then one year, and now I've been at my current agency 4 years. The way I phrased it before was that "I've had the opportunity to work in a variety of positions (or agencies) and have a wide range of skills, such as..."
  • Ooooh nice phrase, there.  Thanks!

  • It's called a "reframe" and I'm the master. Wink
  • Ditto. I'm a bit of a job-hopper myself, because I've always been presented with better opportunities while still employed. I have never in a cover letter or interview brought attention to it and its never actually come up. Just talk about your vast/diverse experience.
  • Yeah, I would leave out any red flags from the cover letter and talk about it in the interview if they address it.
