Oy. Uninsured Sister Plans to Join Roller Derby Team.

Seriously.

I love my sister to death, but I just don't get her.  She is 23, how stupid can she be?

Re: Oy. Uninsured Sister Plans to Join Roller Derby Team.

  • Ouch!  I'd be nervous too!  I have friends that do roller derby and they have had multiple broken bones and injuries.
  • I have several friends who are on Roller Derby teams,  even 2 sisters who are thinking of joining, and you aren't allowed to join UNLESS you have medical coverage, or sign up for coverage through the team/league's plan. Unless she's joining a team that does not follow the same rules as the 3 different teams my friends are on (members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Ass'n) she'll need to get this medical coverage.

Here's a link to the WFTDA's insurance info page. http://wftda.com/resources/insurance

I think the coverage is like $55/year for medical coverage for the bouts and training injuries. Other injuries/illness isn't covered under the team plan- but they can also help getting comprehensive coverage.

If she's planning on playing for  team that doesn't require insurance, I'd question her sanity, and the team's legality.

This makes me feel SO much better.  I will definitely be passing this info on to her, thanks!

  • Hello former derby girl here.  She will need insurance.  We had a couple of unemployed/self-employed girls on the team who had private insurance.  Additionally, WFTDA insurance is accident insurance for stuff that happens on the track.  I heard it's not great but it's something.  Derby girls look out for each other so I'm sure she'll find all this out if/when she signs up.
