Jodi Picoult (possible spoilers?)

I had read My Sister's Keeper and liked it, so when I was going on a roadtrip this past weekend and saw Handle with Care in the books on tape section of the library I thought I'd try it since I've heard so many people rave about her books in general. Is it just that I happened to pick two similarly themed books, or are all of her books the same? They seriously had the same characters. There was the mom who was too absorbed in her sick child's life to notice anything else, the dad that was more emotionally intune with the kids, the older child who was acting out due to lack of attention, and then a controversial legal battle with a lawyer that is going through a personal struggle of their own. Are all her books like this? Just curious if I should give her writing another shot, cuz right now I'm kind of wondering why people like her.

Re: Jodi Picoult (possible spoilers?)

  • I enjoy Jodi Picoult... sometimes. My favorite was Keeping the Faith. That book was VERY interesting.

I have to take Jodi Picoult in doses. She sort of reminds me of Nicholas Sparks and Danielle Steel. I love their books and their writing styles, but if you read everything from them (especially if you do it one right after the other), each book just sort of runs into the next. There are A LOT of similarities.

Jodi Picoult, Nicholas Sparks, Danielle Steel... they're all like wine, I think. You love them or you hate them, and if you have too much of them they give you a migraine. But they're pretty nice in moderation.

I haven't read any of her books, but just from reading some posts on the Book Club board, I gathered that all her books are similar.

  • I read those two books last fall, and found the themes similar but the particulars different enough to keep me interested. My favorite of her books was Plain Truth. Have you read that one?
  • I see, glad to know I'd be running into more of the same if I read more of her books. I guess I'm surprised, I expected something a little more different given all the raves I've heard about her. Oh well. Now the book clubbers will be glad that Ibitched about the book here so they don't have to hear about it at book club.
  • No, I haven't read Plain Truth, only My Sister's Keeper and Handle With Care. I'll try and keep that and the one AT mentioned in mind if I'm motivated to try her again.
  • The two you read are really, really similar. Most of her books deal w/ some unusual life situation & legal litigation that follow. However, not all of them are about sick kids and lame mothers.  :-)
  • Change of Heart was a little different, but she's the type of author that I have to read once a year.  Her books are too formulaic.

Like Dan Brown, I can't stand that every chapter is a cliff hanger.  I don't mind reading them every once in a while, but more than that gets on my nerves.

  • I stopped reading her books because i thought the same thing.. It drove me crazy!

  • Thanks for the heads up, ladies. I enjoyed My Sister's Keeper, but I think I want to wait awhile before reading another book like it.

  • Thanks Alethea & Curbside, good to hear I just so happened to pick two really similar ones. That definitely inclines me to give her another try. Maybe in a year or two ;)
