I had a brand new student yesterday. Seemed like a good kid and all. I saw him in the back of the room texting in the middle of class, and I was just about to tell him to put his phone away when he started screaming and swearing profusely, before I could say anything at all. I was a little shocked, a little pissed. Finally he stopped and just looked at me and said "Um...my mom just died"
Yeah. He seriously found out his mom died by text message. Not kidding. WHO THE EFF WOULD EVER DO THAT?!?!?!? Call the f*cking school, or at least if you're going to text the kid, tell him there's an emergency and he needs to leave class to call home or something. FFS. I had NO idea what to do. F*ck.
I appreciate the ease of text messaging, but I completely hate what it's doing to society.
Re: Worst use of text message. EVER.
W.T.F. That is the worst use of text messages ever. Who the hell would do that. That is horrible. I can't even believe that.
Definitely sending some T&P his way.
THIS.
That poor kid, how awful...
Oh, my goodness. That is so sad. I feel so bad for him.
This. OMG. How horrible. Seriously.... T&P for that kid & his family.
O.M.G. whoever sent him that text is beyond stupid!!
What did you do, Laura?
I don't even know....I told him to go wherever he needed, go check in with his advisor or with our front office, do whatever he needed. So he sat down and started tried to take notes again .... poor thing was in COMPLETE shock ... I said, "No, hon...I think you need to go. I'm not mad, you're not being kicked out, but this isn't the place where you should be right now..."
Not knowing a DAMN thing about the kid (I seriously couldn't even remember his name), never having had any conversation with him other than to give him a textbook, I really had NO idea. In hindsight, I would have put another student in charge of finishing the example we were on and walked with him to the office myself, but I couldn't even think. I felt like such a dumb*ss. Poor, poor child.
This. How awful
