Why so much hatred over the bill?

I don't know that I support it 100% but what else can be done???

Why does the public hate this bill so much?  I know, I know, it's a bailout for Wall Street and the rich speculators. I get that.  Do most people really not understand how much of our economy IS Wall Street?

I apologize b/c this has probably been talked about for days on end the past week but the end of the month is a really busy time at work for me so I haven't been on much.

Re: Why so much hatred over the bill?

  • Yes I think you're right. People don't get how much this will affect the entire economy. I didn't at first. I hate bailouts as much as anyone. I thought the gov't was exaggerating and I had to do my own research to find out that is not the case. But I don't think most people are willing to do that (research I mean).

Plus it doesn't help that this particular bill has some good points and some very bad ones. It's not like this is the perfect solution that the average, ignorant American just doesn't "get."

Because the average person is an uninformed and poorly educated moron. The average person has no idea how banks work, has no idea how our nation's payrolls are possibly at risk, and has formed an opinion without even trying to educated him/herself.

  • FBR, that was what I figured.  I was trying to be optimistic.  Maybe we should go to a Dictatorship.  KIDDING!

You know why did I even ask this seeing as how many Americans are "afraid" of Obama because of his middle name.  I should have known the answer.  Why did I bother typing?

  • Honestly, as much as I'd like to say that it's because the bill is flawed and the people demand a better bill with more oversight that will solve the long-term problem and end up as a good deal for taxpayers... I'm sure it's because Wall St is the embodiment of rich Eastern elites who happen to be the scapegoat du jour.

Also, IMO mainstream America has an issue with punishing people regardless of the consequences of that punishment - the "let 'em fry" mentality. People want to see the greedy executives suffer, not be helped out. They want help for themselves and have a complete lack of understanding about how helping the greedy executives is the only way to help them.

Case in point, a letter from an MSNBC reader (with accompanying baby bump photo):

"My poor child! We need to be thinking about the next generation! Please vote NO!... I do not agree with helping out financial institutions when no one cares if I'm living paycheck to paycheck. I feel that Congress should get the funds from the big oil companies and [for?] the Iraq war! It's amazing how we can pull this money out of a hat for Wall Street while the little people suffer! It's not fair! Gas prices, groceries, energy prices, property taxes are increases while I'm barely getting by! Let the banks deal with it!"

Or this one, with accompanying grumpy old man photo:

"Unlike many people I have always lived within my means. Although the house is paid for, the property tax alone is barely affordable. With no savings, no investments other than the house and the land it's on, Wall Street means nothing to me. And yet I have to pay to fix its failures? While some a-holes are walking around with million dollar bonuses? Screw that, I just wont work anymore. I'll go out on permanent disability, caused from the mental havoc suffered from hearing about this mess we're in."

    Understand of economics FAIL.

Seriously, the gut check series normally makes me want to gouge my eyes out, and this is no exception, but it's an interesting insight into what America thinks and how little they've been educated about the consequences of doing nothing:

  • Oh I was reading some of those doozies this morning.  *eye roll*
  • All I know is most high up business people I"ve talked to are scared shitless of this bill. They think the economy will tank WORSE if it goes through.

its setting a horrible precendent, AND telling the public that there is zero faith in business....hence the tanking of the market.

  • Well, my Rep voted for it. I think that make happy...
