Taxes

Who does your taxes? H&R Block or an individual? If you have an accountant or CPA you would recommend, please share! I really think we could do ours on Turbo Tax, but DH is skeptical with my new business. The guy I saw last year was nice, but it really ticked me off that I had to pay him so much ($200 for both) when he did both of our returns in less than 30 minutes while I sat there and watched. Angry

Re: Taxes

  • I've been really happy with H&R block.  I even got my parents switched after years of working with their personal CPA.  That guy charged them so much for so little.  Pus with H&R block, their online tax filing system is way easy.  But then again, my taxes are really simple.

  • I think for what I need, H&R block was a joke.  They charged an insane amount, but I didn't need much done.
  • I would highly recommend NOT using H&R Block.  Two reasons:  they did my mom and dad's taxes about 10 years ago and fucked up royally.  My parents are STILL paying for that mistake.  Long story.  2nd:  I used to work at the IRS and all the stuff from H&R Block is definitely a joke.  They charge you PER piece of paper that they attach to the 1040 and about 75-80% of it is unnecessary crap that the IRS doesn't even look at.  It's a huge waste of money.

  • Pretty much all of the commercial tax-prep places are a ripoff. I used to volunteer for a nonprofit that did free tax prep for low-income workers, and we had people come in all the time telling us how Jackson Hewitt or whoever was going to charge like $200 for a really simple return...our training was basically the same as theirs, too. However, this service only takes families who make $50k a year or less.

I think Turbo Tax is pretty good and self-explanatory. But if you'd feel better hiring someone, here's an article that explains your options pretty well.

  • My coworker is the Controller for our company, and does tax work on the side. He is brilliant. I sent my friend to him (she has a regular job, plus two contract gigs on the side - so lots of tricky and confusing tax issues to deal with), and she is so happy with the results! And he's just an all-around great guy. Shoot me an email if you want his contact info. ldandretta at gmail dot com
