do you toss out your change?

I was reading.....a website somewhere (*sigh* I have to stop closing tabs before I can get links lol).....where a person commented that they throw away their change. Like pennies and nickels - she just chucks them in the trash because she doesn't like carrying them around or having to count them out when paying for something and "they're not worth enough to bother with."

I was stunned. Maybe I'm just an uber tightwad, but to me money is money! I can understand not wanting to carry them about because that gets heavy, but at least whack that stuff in a jar or something when you get home (I have an uncle that filled up an Arrowhead water bottle with coins over the course of a year or two and ended up taking a very nice 2 week vacation with the proceeds, so it absolutely adds up!).

Is this a common thing that I was just clueless about? Do a lot of people toss out their change?

Re: do you toss out your change?

  • That's insane! I put all of mine in our minimoon jar... which we emptied out last summer for Hawai'i and are trying to refill for our first anniversary.

I'm shaking my head here... who throws change into the garbage? Seriously - there are people on the streets begging for it.

  • I'm with you. That sounds ridiculous to throw away money no matter what value it is! We keep all our change, uh, all over the place Smile

We have some stashed in the car in case we need it for a parking meter or drive through order. I keep some in my wallet just in case. And we also have some in a jar on our dresser in case we need it for laundry.

  • I def don't toss it!

We have a change bowl by the front door and the last time it was full, we had a bet going about how much money was in it.  The winner got to keep it.  My mom won with a guess of $40... DH and I were totally under-guessing at $15-20!  It really DOES add up!

  • People throw away change?? That's insane! John's stash is much much bigger than mine because I'm that person holding up the line while fishing for the pennies to pay the exact amount. =P

  • That's crazy talk!  We have over $100 in our change jar, and that's from about 6 months of change.  Seriously, people toss money out?  Total craziness!

    Exactly my first thought.

My next thought is, who is this person, I'd like to take their spare change off their hands.  I'd be glad to make weekly trips to their home (hopefully their close, lol) and pick up this change from them.

I LOVE change.  Is that crazy?  I'm that customer that will pay for something in all my acquired change.  Yes, count out every nickel and dime.  I do this when the wallet has become too heavy with coins.  When I used to live closer to Vegas, I had a Vegas bucket.  I worked at a bank and would roll all my coins like a good girl and change it out.  And essentially then go on to lose it all gambling!!

  • Clearly that woman has not discovered the joy of dumping change into coinstar and emerging with $210 amazon gift card.

Change is like giving yourself a tip.

  • Throw away change?!?  Uh, no.  We keep 2 coin jars on MH's dresser - one for silver change and one for pennies.  He hates change so he empties his pockets of it every day.  I put mine in when my wallet is full.  When the jars get full I roll it all and deposit it at the bank.  It's usually more than $100.

BAHAHAHA this is me too! It drives Ben craaaaazy (he just brings all of his change home and dumps it in a container). They don't have pennies in Australia anymore (everything is rounded up or down to the nearest 5c if you're paying in cash), but I still stand there counting out my 5 and 10 cent coins lol. I'm the person that everyone else in line hates. Stick out tongue

  • DH never threw it out, but I think he used to just leave it lying around.  I've found so many coins around his apartment!  His excuse is that he doesn't want to carry a "change purse".  Recently, I washed out a salsa container and have been making him dump his change in there, then rolling it and taking to the bank.  I think we get about $20 each trip.
  • Were you reading a post on MM?

No, I don't toss my change.  I keep most of it in the car or my coin purse.

  • No way! I'm stunned too! We never toss out change. We save them up in a Gatorade container and when it gets full, we take it to Coinstar. It definitely adds up! I think we've gotten $600 worth of Amazon.com gift certificates from trading them in at the Coinstar machines (if you get cash, they charge you a fee...but it's free to get certificates).

No, it wasn't even on the Nest...I wish I'd bookmarked it or saved it or something!

  • I did't know they dont't have pennies in Aus.  I wish we would adopt something similar here.

They used to have 1 and 2 cent coins, but they were phased out in the early 1990's. I thought it was really weird when I first moved here, but I have to say that now that I'm used to it, I like it! If you pay for something in cash, it's either rounded up or down to the nearest five cents - if you pay for it with a debit or credit card, you pay the exact amount to the penny.

I wish the USA would adopt the policy of incorporating tax into the purchase price of an item...it's so nice to see a price tag on something and know that's exactly what it will cost without having to add on tax when you get to the register!

  • No way! We save our coins. The quarters & nickels we use for parking and keep some loose change in the car. DH had jars and jars of change which he saved over the years. I got him an automatic coin sorter for Christmas a couple of years ago and he patiently sorted and rolled all of them. I had to drop him off the bank because he had about 3 - bags full of coins lol. I think we got about $2K for all the coins :-).
  • yea that is competely bananas.  we save a lot of our change & last time we cashed in, it was close to $100.

My dad won't spend $1 bills.  He will always use bigger bills & then if they give him any $1s back he just keeps them.  His stash added up FAST.  I don't have that kind of discipline & I don't normally have cash.  I am definitely one of those people putting a $1 soda on my debit card, but it was impressive how quickly it all added up.

This exactly!  I can't imagine throwing out money, who does that?  I love Amy's idea with two jars, one for pennies and the other for silver coins.  Of course in Canada we have loonies and toonies so the change purse can get VERY heavy sometimes.

  • No way!  I have a piggy bank that I was putting all my loose change in and we eventually took it to a Coinstar machine and ended up with like $80!  So we redeemed it for an Amazon GC (otherwise the machines charge you a ridiculous fee for counting the coins).

  • Oh no!  We collect our change in a big plastic jar (it held Biscotti Cookies from Costco) and then when it gets full we take it to the change machine at the grocery store.  We've made $500+ at a time with that jar!
