Do you buy your friends children birthday gifts??

Like, if you don't get to see your friends frequently--live in different states--would you still send a birthday gift?  Assuming you weren't invited to any celebration too.

I'm at the point where I barely remember to send cards, and I haven't actually even met a few of my friends' children, but somehow I feel like a "bad friend" for not sending a gift to their kid(s).  am I just being silly or should i feel guilty?  TIA!

Re: Do you buy your friends children birthday gifts??

  • I never have bought gifts for children unless we were invited to the party (some of our local friends w/ kids used to invite us to their kids parties, but we're local and close to them and their kids).  Unless it was OOT family (like my BIL's kids or something), or I'm invited to the party (locally) and go, then no gift from us.

DD's first birthday is coming up, and I don't expect to receive gifts from anyone not coming to her party (so nothing from my out-of-state friends).  I'm sure we'll get gifts from aunts/uncles out of state, but that's family, not friends, and they like to send small gifts throughout the year to spoil her anyways.  =)

I think I did for the kids 1st birthday, if I remember correctly. But stopped after that. Within the last 3 years or so I got 3 more nephews that I always buy for, so it would just be too much to buy for friends children too. I don't send cards either. I usually just send a message to the mom saying Happy Birthday.

  • Only my best friend who is back in WV.  Her daughter turned 6 last summer, I didn't send a gift, but I sent a card with money.

  • As a parent, if you were my friend in this situation I wouldn't even think twice if you didn't send bday gifts.  Most of my friends are either out of town or out of state and they usually don't send the kids gifts and it really never occurs to me that they "should."  And honestly, with the economy the way it is and with kids being so spoiled these days, I really don't care if people don't bring gifts to the party.....I just like to have people joining us in the celebration!  So you're not a bad friend!
