Is your house color a secret?

I'm on the Architectural Control Committee in our HOA and lately there has been some drama involving house colors.  Some very nice nighbors asked two other neighbors for the color of their house because they really like it and would like to paint their house the same color.  However, 1 neighbor refused to give it and then other one reluctantly gave it to them.  Please note that these houses are not near each other at all in our neighborhood- on different streets.  I was just shocked that people would withhold this information (and one of the girls is my friend who is super sweet and definitely not the grumpy neighbor-type).  I understand you don't want your next door neighbors to have the same color, but I think it is a compliment if someone wants to have the same color you do.  Am I the only one that thinks this is weird?

Re: Is your house color a secret?

  • No, you're not the only one.

    I think that is strange.

IMO, it's sort of like someone asking you where you bought your shoes because they like them and want a pair... and you don't want to tell them because you don't want them to have the same pair of shoes as you.

    Really? Hmm

I could *maybe* understand if they were next door neighbors, as having the same color house as your immediate neighbor can occasionally lower the value when you're trying to sell... but if you're not next door neighbors, I think that's a bit dumb.

  • That's weird. I've always thought it must be difficult to select a color to paint your house and figured if we ever had to do it I'd want to ask someone in the neighborhood for the color they used b/c then I'd at least know what it looks like on a whole house. I don't want to be like the neighbor up the street whose house in certain lights looks white, and in other light looks this weird glowy-minty green color. Besides, don't you figure if the neighbor refused to give the color that the other person could always compare it to swatches and end up with a pretty darn similar color?
  • I agree with you and AT.  If the houses were next door neighbors--or even on the same stretch of road as each other, I might be a little leary, but if they are on different roads all together...well then yes, it's weird.  Oh, or if they were a crazy color--like a special shade of magenta or turquoise I might not want to share either.  But most common exterior house colors?  C'mon, there aren't many that are really that nice.  Yeah....no.

And btw, I DO NOT want any of you copying DH and I--our house is a precious flower--it's brick red....also known as brick.  Stick out tongue

  • That's bizarre- I don't even think I would mind sharing that information with neighbors. It's a compliment!

Funny you mention this!  This in fact happened between the two current neighbors who both have their house this green color.  And the original neighbors came home as the paint samples were being compared and were not pleased!  Oh neighborhood drama!

  • Oooooo, caught in the act. What a scandal!
  • I'm not a fan of our current house color, but at least I have learned from this situation that I will be going to other neighborhoods to house color shop.  That way the neighbors won't call me "paint chip girl".  And yes, that name has been mentioned!
  • Umm. Wow. This post suddenly makes me glad I do not live in a neighborhood and have brick! LOL

One of the big paint companies (I think it is either Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams) has an application for the i-phone where you can take a picture of a color and it will try to match it with the closest color they have. That way you could be all covert about your color shopping.

  • We do not have a house, but I find it hard to believe the color would be under lock and key if we did.
