Landscaping

We need help. We have a coupl flowerbeds with palm tress in them that need something else - right now its weeds. Once we get rid of the weeds I have no clue what to put in there. We're thinking a couple small plants/shrubs and wood chips to cover the ground. Also, we have a narrow flower bed along the side of the house for maybe flowers, but have no idea what would do well. Any ideas? Where do you get inspiration?

And then there's the pool/patio area.... We need to be on yard crashers!!

Re: Landscaping

  • Try to go with prennials so they will be less maintenance.

I don't have a lot of recs as my experience with gardening is mostly in the midwest and we didn't use the same plants as they do here. Birds of paradise are always very pretty. Lavender is good too.

  • I have no idea. But, I'm more of a visual type of person. Take pics & post. :)
  • How much sun do these areas get and does the ground tend to be more dry or wet?

  • We've got a lot of small and large palm trees in our front and back yards.  I don't think we've got anything around them though except for wood chips...which actually looks pretty good!  :-)  When we were looking for other stuff to plant, we just asked some people at Lowe's and they were a big help.  Oh, we did put in quite a few Lily of the Nile and they've done well.  Plus they're kinda pretty.

We also just planted our container vegetable/fruit garden (we couldn't plant them in the ground...Riley would eat his way through it all!).  So far, everything is looking great!  I even ate our first strawberry this morning!  Might be kind of fun to plant fruits and veggies!

As far as the wood chips go...they dry out quickly in our climate.  Next time we're getting the recylced tire ones.  They're more expensive but will last forever.

What kind of sun does the side narrow flower bed get?  Check out this site for the zone we live in and what will do well and when:  http://www.garden.org/zipzone/

If I think of more info I'll let you know!

  • Since we are pretty dry here you can get some pretty ornamental grasses as fillers.

Great website Lori! I like how you can narrow the search. Our little backyard area is very shadey and the ground very wet so it's been hard for me to find plants for it. Thanks!

  • We just redid our landscape. We went to Sunshine Growers in Ontario (Millikan below the 60). They have great prices, only thing is that you need to know what your looking for, it is so big and nothing is really labeled that good. We planted mostly Sweet Pea bushes, flax, Mexican sage, cone flowers and star jasmine. All are pretty drought tolerant. E-mail me if you want pictures! AnnElizabethLara at yahoo dot com
  • I'll try to post pics at some point. Thanks for all the ideas!

All of the areas get pretty good sun. I'm going to look into the tire thingies. I also saw some pretty ground cover on Lowe's website. This is much harder than I thought it would be! I think we'll need the most help with the pool and backyard.

I want to plant a small herb garden in the backyard, there's a little planter.

  • Have you seen this?

It looks interesting but from some of the reviews on Amazon we aren't too sure. But we definitely need help, we have grass and 2 rose bushes from the previously owners and thats it. We did have like 20 palm trees but we had them removed
