Ok, need advice re: Mirena vs. Paragard

I was on the pill but had no sex drive, so I want to switch to an IUD. But... every time I think I have my mind made up, I do a little more googling and read terrible things about each one....

So - if you have either, can you share your experience? My insurance doesn't cover any of the IUD cost, which makes it even scarier to try to make a decision. I'm terrified of paying hundreds of dollars and then hating it and having to pay more to have it removed.

Mirena ladies - did you gain weight? Have headaches?

Paragard ladies - how heavy are your periods on it?

Is there a lot of discharge with either one?

It really seems to me every woman has such a different reaction to it. I'm hoping the reason I'm reading all this negative stuff online is simply because the people who have bad experiences are more apt to write about it online.

Re: Ok, need advice re: Mirena vs. Paragard

  • I have Paragard and LOVE IT!  I chose Paragard because I didn't want the hormones.  I have had it for 6 months now.  In the beginning I had a lot of discharge but now it is back to "normal".  My periods just returned after having a baby so the first one was really heavy but now they are back to "normal".

Stop reading stuff online and speak with your doctor about the risks.

Thanks for the feedback. I did speak with my doctor, she told me either is a fine option, and she personally recommends Mirena. She said she has it and loves it.

  • Just wondering for myself because I too have to pay for my IUD out of pocket, but is there a big price difference between paraguard and mirena? I think Mirena is $400-500 plus the office visit. Thanks!
  • My doctor's office quoted me $517 for the Paragard itself, plus $157 for insertion.

I have to call again on the Mirena to find out the exact cost, but my doctor said it's more than Paragard. For some reason I'm thinking the total cost would be around $800 for Mirena.

  • I also have the paragard and *heart* it. I have had it for a year. My periods are a little heavier than before but not more uncomfortable. I do have some discharge during the month. My insurance would not cover any of the cost either....so i went to planned parenthood. The paragard was $400 and mirenda was $500 (there was of course a charge for the pelvic and insertion).

If money is a factor like it was for me, you can keep the paragard for 12 years v. 5 years with mirena. For me that broke to $6 a month for the next 12 years...not a bad deal.

    HTH!

  • Here's a thread from last week on it - we get asked this very often.  Let us know if you have additional questions!  And keep in mind if you read horror stories that every form of BC CAN have complications - pills are notorious for causing stroke and blood clots, for example.

  • I have the Mirena and I love it.  It's great to have a worry free form of birth control.  I didn't gain any weight and I don't have headaches with it.  I do seem to have a little more discharge with it, but I've always had a bit of discharge.  The amount doesn't bother me.  Lots of my friends have it and no one's had any issues.

  • I asked a similar question and got some great info. Here's my thread. HTH

Unfortunately, as of March 1, Bayer jacked up the price of Mirena.

  • I had my Paragard removed today.  In case this is of any interest.  I posted about the experience in this thread.
  • i got Mirena in Dec and have loved it.  My dr. reccomended Mirena b/c i had Depo for 8yrs and never had a period.  The insertion was hell for about 45sec and then minor cramping and i was fine.  I'm actually loosing weight but i have had headaches but i've always had them.  Also minor spotting

Many states now have gov. ins that pays for bc that your health ins doesn't cover. i'm in PA and it's called Select Plan.  I didn't pay a dime and I have a professional full time job and great insurance so most women qualify.
