Inspired by Tammy's response. What is something you are unjustifiably afraid of?
Re: Strange Fears
Mine is squirrels. Seriously.
When I was in college, I saw a story on the news about a squirrel who fell out of a tree into some woman's open sunroof while she was driving. It then clawed and bit her face. I've been terrified ever since.
Mine is needles (Medical) in my mouth / head / back
something about needle meeting bone makes me just go into fetal position.
Thus, I have had a root canal (when I was 10) with no anesthetic, and have gotten up 10 mins into a dentist appt, when she turned to me with a huge needle - left, and never went back to her (when I was 16).
This is also the REAL reason why I plan to give birth naturally when I have a baby. I just can't do the back needle stuff..
(See nerve conducting test a few posts below - I had to not know what was going on, and not be warned about anything going into back - I was freaking out in my head!)
?
The eye dr - or I guess my eyes continuing to get worse. I've had glasses since I was 7. I would rather go to the gyno or the dentist than the eye dr - at least at those places I don't get bad news every time!!
Mine is actually being discussed on Oprah right now. I don't know if it's unjustified, but being stranded in the Ocean is terrifying to me. I actually won't go in the ocean on anything smaller than a cruise ship. My family has a boat a if they were to take it in the ocean I wouldn't go. I'm more of a lake girl, haha.
I should add - I will go in the ocean to swim, just not deep in the ocean!
Deep water, but only in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. I can do deep pools, but not natural bodies of water. I start to panic and get a mini anxiety attack. The thing is I am a totally capable swimmer. In fact I love the water, but I have to consciously not focus on the fact that I can't touch the bottom and I can't think about what might be in the water with me. I'm convinced that I drowned in one of my previous lives.
This, which makes me think it's not so strange after all. However I will add that if someone every horsed around with me in water where I can't touch the ground, I would probably knock them out. No joke.
Spiders- been afraid of them my whole life. On a mission trip someone I know was bitten by a black widow and ended up in the ICU, didn't help my fear. Once I made Jason drive over late at night to kill one on my bedroom ceiling because I couldn't be in the room with it there.
Balloons popping- This is actually funny because I worked for 2 years at a dollar store and part of my job was blowing up balloons. I had no problem blowing them up, I just can't be around when other people do. I also freak out if I see children playing with a balloon or balloons on the floor.
The dark- Until I moved in with DH, I slept with a nightlight
I would have continued this if it wasn't for DH putting his foot down and saying absolutely not. I am terrified of someone breaking in and somehow I feel they will stay away if they see a light on.
Yes, I am crazy!

Frozen lakes: I didn't realize this until a year ago when I went out with some friends ice fishing and started hyperventilating and freaking out while out on the ice... it was soooo embarrassing!!!!
Fear of being attacked: I've watched too many scary movies and now I check my backseat, closest and behind the shower curtain... if I'm home alone every sound freaks me out!
OMG I LOVE YOU RIGHT NOW! I thought I was the only one!
I feel this way in water too! I can usually make myself forget about it, but god help me if I get touched by something in the water! (fish, seaweed, etc.) Then I panic and thrash around and have to get out. ::shudders::
I also do not like spiders. That whole thing about there is always one within 3 feet of you makes me want to build a completely airtight and enclosed little bubble to live in.
I'm super afraid of scary looking Clowns...I hyperventilate and all.
The Dark.
Spiders.
Needles, but I'm getting over that one.
I had my first ever full blown panic attack snorkeling in St. Martin. As soon as I got in the water, I panicked. I tried to relax about it, hung on to the guide for dear life (how embarrassing) and started to relax a little to at least stick my head in the water. When I turned around to see how far away we were from the boat I flipped out, started to get really sick and just had visions of me puking in the water and having it float around the 30 other people who were with us. I hauled ass back to the boat and stayed there the rest of the time.
Small spaces. I don't really like elevators-I won't go in one if I don't have my phone or if there are too many people in there already. I normally opt for the stairs if I can. I'm not fond of caves or anything like that either. I hate to be held down or stuck under blankets. Maybe it's more of a fear of feeling trapped I guess.....
In high school we had something called "project adventure" in gym class. They made us crawl through a cement drain under the school in single file, holding the person's feet in front of you....OMG. I thought I might die! It was pretty long, so I made sure I was on the very end with only 1 person behind me. I still hated every minute.
We were made to do it or we would fail. They also made us do things like fall backward into people's arms (trust thing) off the bleachers, and they had a rope course where we would be strapped into harnesses and have to climb up 20 feet and jump off. horrid. horrid. I'm scarred for life!

I share the fear of the deep water with all of you too - pools are ok, but in lakes & oceans just the thought of not knowing what is down there or that something might touch me freaks me out! I didn't go out very far in Hawaii because of this!
I also have a terrible fear of getting into a bad car accident. It doesn't effect my driving and I don't get the fear while I am driving, I just scared that someday I'll end up pin in a car somewhere screaming with no help in sight!
reading all your responses is making me feel so much better!
I'm also afraid of the dark. I always feel like there's someone behind my or watching me. I hate it! I'm also terrified of spiders. I can spot them from a mile away. I think my brain is always on the look out for them b/c me peripheral vision is super sensitive to any little dark spots on the ceiling or walls. It drives DH nuts b/c I will beg him to kill them because I can't relax unless they're gone. He's constantly asking me "how the eff did you even see that?!?!" lol
