a little dose of randomness for your day

I bought some nut trail mix to take to the movies yesterday (Alice in Wonderland = the awesome!) since sugar is on my no-no list. It has a few little carob pieces in it, too.

I freaking love carob. I don't like chocolate, but I looooove carob (which, btw, I don't regard as a chocolate substitute because they taste nothing alike). I know a lot of people think it's gross, but I absolutely love it. Ben thinks I'm a freak of nature. Just thought I should let you all know what kind of sick, twisted person you're fraternizing with on this board. Stick out tongue

Re: a little dose of randomness for your day

  • I've never had carob before. Do you still want to fraternize with me? =P

    SHUN.

Lol I think a lot of people haven't, just because they have no real need or desire to (after all, most people love chocolate). When I was a kid my mom went through this long health food kick - stuff like we had almond butter instead of peanut butter, and she'd have carob instead of chocolate. If I hadn't had it as a kid and therefore knew I liked it, I probably wouldn't have ever tried it either. Smile

  • I think there was carob in a cereal that I used to love.

Did you already see Alice?!?!?!  In 3D?  So jealous!  Gonna have to get the MIL to babysit when she visits so we can go see it.  I was actually gonna post about it - I'm DYING to see it!

We saw it and it ROCKED! Dark and funny and insanely surreal - absolutely the Burton/Depp combo at their best. Alice was one of my favorite childhood books, so I was really interested to see what Burton would do with a re-imagining of it.

Not in 3D though, because my podunk town doesn't have a 3D theater. Apparently they're installing one and it will be up and running in a couple of months, but we shall see...

Hmmmmm....maybe I will see it after all, and give it a chance.  "Alice" is one of my all-time favs, too, and I have been leery about seeing this new version.  First of all, I don't like Johnny Depp at all (please don't hate me, most people I know adore him, but I don't see it one little bit!).  But also, from the previews, it appears that very much has been changed.  They keep calling Helena Bonham Carter the Red Queen, though it's clear that she's playing the Queen of Hearts from the previews, and they aren't the same character at all....I guess they've merged them?  And I've heard that Alice is 19?  For me, Alice being 7 1/2 exactly is important to the story, and her journey from childhood.

I guess I'm all for modernizing things, but not when the main points of the story get lost, and I'm worried that's what's happened here.  But with your glowing review, maybe I'll give it a chance!  :)

Actually, as odd as it may sound, this is why it worked for me. Like I said, I adore Alice, and I think I'd have been disappointed if it was a straight adaptation - I think if Burton had simply tried to adapt the original story, he wouldn't have been able to resist putting his own stamp on it, so instead, it's a whole NEW story with the same characters and ambiance.

As you said, Alice is 19 - she has flashbacks and memories to her previous trip to Wonderland, although she thinks it's simply a reoccurring dream that she's had since childhood. She falls down the rabbit hole again, and this time she has to save Wonderland from the Red Queen - who, as you said, is something of an mixture of the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts - by slaying the Jabberwocky. (None of this is a spoiler - it's all set out from very early in the film.)

It's a bit like what Burton did with Sleepy Hollow - some of the original aspects and characters of the story are there, but it's really an entirely different and new story that stands alone.

  • Oh, I'm really looking forward to seeing Alice in Wonderland!  And.....I like carob too, so I'll fraternize with you any day!  ;)
  • i don't discriminate...I like carob & chocolate!  I definitely eat chocolate way more just b/c it is always easier to get my hands on!

as for alice in wonderland, I think I will probably skip it b/c Tim Burton is just too weird for me.  I really hated Nightmare Before Christmas (I know, I am one of the few).  but maybe I am being too quick to judge, I really love Christmas & fun holiday movies so making it all dark & wicked really wasn't for me.

  • I can't stand carob, it is so chewy.  You chew, and chew and it never dissolves.  Granted I haven't had it in 25 yrs, but it was chewy back then.

I can't wait to see Alice.  We don't have time this weekend, but it is on my list for next!
