Anyone work in NC and live in SC?

Does anyone else live in SC and work in NC?  I know that I need to file a NC return and an SC return, but I'm confused because my tax software makes it sound like I have to have been taxed in BOTH SC and NC to get a credit on my SC return for the taxes I paid to NC.... but obviously, only taxes for one state were taken out of my check.

If anyone else is in this situation, advice would be much appreciated!  Taxes make me want to pull my hair out!  I think my DH is cussing me for being such a die-hard DIY'er ;-)

  • I do, but we have someone prepare our's each year. We do file both states and they way it has worked out is NC refunds us and SC we owe.

  • yes, we do, and yes, you have to file both states.  usually we get a refund from NC and have to pay to SC.

  • We also do (well, DH works in NC and I work in SC).  Our first year, we owed in SC because DH makes significantly more money than I do.  Now he has more state taxes withheld from him paycheck and with the reciprocity between NC and SC, it ends up working out so that we get a small refund from both (though we haven't done our 2009 taxes yet, so who knows what will happen this year).  We have a CPA do our taxes, so I don't know the specifics.
