Today we picked out a pup! He is a 10 week old coonhound mix named Dillon, from a rescue shelter. We've both never had a dog, and are nervous but super excited. I think he is supposed to arrive next Friday!! YIKES!!

I'll post a pic below from the shelter...

Oh my god, he's freaking adorable! The coloring is different but looks like my Rufus did! Good luck! Be patient, give him an awesome name, crate train, and start all his training right away! You'll be much happier!

We're not sure if we want to change the name yet... If he already responds to it, we'll probably keep it. If not, I am totally open to ideas!

Leigha, what kind of dog is Rufus?? They know Dillon's mom is a black & tan coonhound, but have no idea about the dad. His brothers are all brown and black, one has that banded coat kinda like a pitbull, but I dont think they really look like pitbulls??

Rufus is an Australian Shephard. A lot of herding dogs look similar.Based on your dogs pic, I wouldn't be surprised if his dad was a blue merle shepherd.

He looks like a sweet & spunky little thing.

Good luck with first time dog-dom. Its frustrating at times, but I promise if you stick with it you guys and the little furball will figure eachother out. Its a process...but you'll get there.

Another tip--go register for petsmart perks RIGHT NOW online, and get Dillon up to date on his shots asap (probably already will be). Sign him up for the basic puppy course, the first one that comes around (sometimes petperks sends a coupon). They help you teach the basics in a very effective manor (sit, stay, down, leave it, take it, drop it (that's a toughie!) and loose leash walking).
