Recycling just go easier in Houston

Our newest park, Discovery Green, is nestled in the heart of our city in downtown, and has just announced that on Saturday's you can bring your recyclables!!!

This is so monumental because if you live here and are an apartment dweller, unless you either know someone who owns a house, or know of the ONE drop off site where you literally drive to what is equivalent to a dump (smells and all), you couldn't recycle.

I remember watching this thing about recycling in New York and drooling over the fact that they have places set up in the city on weekends where you can bring a bag of your recyclables and sort them neatly into bins lining the street. And now we have that option here! This will surely piss off my husband as I now have to scramble to find a place in our 820 sqft apt to store "trash" until the weekend, but hey, I don't buy a lot of packaged things anyway, so it shouldn't be too bad.

At any rate, I am so tickled with this I don't even know what to do with myself!

  • Horray!

I am actually kind of shocked that your complex doesn't have recycling. Is this the norm in the US or is it a local thing?

  • Yes

  • It is great!  But there are several drop off sites in Houston and the interior sub cities like Bellaire and West U.  We lived in an Apartment for 4 years and had no problem taking the recycling.  We stored everything in an empty closet until we took it.

    nothing
  • That's great news!  We're lucky enough to have curbside single stream recycling.

  • The only one we could find was on Westpark! Lol. Also, I dont even have a pantry so yeah, no "extra closet". I will figure it out though!

  • I would drop it at the West U self service one near Kirby/59 on my way to work.  I actually still have to do this with glass.  Lots of people dont realize its there and drive that way everyday.

As for storage, maybe some big bins with lids.  You could keep them covered and it wouldnt look so messy between visits, and be easy to transport to DG on the weekend.  Hope you find something that works!

    nothing
  • This is cool, but my apartment in Houston had recycling.
