BR: yes yet another baby post, sorry...mamas I need your input

I'm sorry for all of my BR posts lately, but I need a little help from the mamas out there. On my list of Baby Stuff Left To Buy, I have two things that I'm uncertain about.

First up: breast pads. I was planning on going with washable cloth ones, but I've read really great things about LilyPadz. Does anyone use them? Are they worth the money? Or should I just stick with the cloth ones?

Second: bottle sterilizers. Do I need one? I'm looking at the kind that go in the microwave. We do not have a dishwasher so without a sterilizer they will be washed by hand (I've read that boiling is bad for the nipples??? so they'd just be washed in soapy hot water, rinsed and air dried).

  • no idea about the sterilizer, I haven't looked into this at all.

as for the pads, I have looked at those but don't own them.  I have only been at this for 2 weeks and think it might be something I would try out next, now that my nipples are not on fire but for the first few days I really couldn't have anything rubbing.  I used these odd domed shape things made by medela.  and soothies.  I have cloth pads now because they were cheap to make (I made them out of thin fleece and flannel.

Not sure why I answered but I want to read the responses from ppl that actually know what they are talking about...

  • I bought Lily Padz the first time around, but I didn't like them.  I found that once I removed them, they didn't stick unless I could wash them in hot water which made them useless when out in public and having to nurse.  I was also concerned about getting thrush from them.

To be honest, the first time around I was anal and sterilized often.  I was a lot more relaxed this time around and only sterilized a couple of times.  I preferred to use an electric sterilizer.  After the first few times I just wash the bottles in hot soapy water.  I think sterilizing is important to do if you have a preemie or a baby with a compromised immunity.

Oh, and if you don't have this on your list already, I would put an ultimate crib sheet or something similar.  There's a stomach bug going around and my youngest is sick and I have two, but I should buy another one. It makes life much easier to just change this than having to remove a fitted sheet and waterproof mattress cover.

  • IDK about the breast pads. I used to use the ones from Walmart-- the Lansinoh ones. Then I bought the bra that Renee & Jamie suggested & don't really use breast pads any longer.

My MIL bought us a bottle sterilizer.  We sterilized in the beginning a lot -- now we rarely do. We don't have a dishwasher either and wash by hand. It's not really a problem . . .

A lot of people have recommended these to me, but unfortunately they don't sell them (or even an equivalent) in Australia. Sad

I was interested in these too but with bigger bewbies I am not sure if they'll work for me, even if I get the larger sized ones.  I've been using disposable ones and HATE them.  I hope to order some wool ones soon since I tend to leak alot and have read that the wool ones keeps things dry.

Hot soapy water is fine as long as you're on municipal water and not well water.  You can also sterilize once in a while by boiling water and putting them in there for 3-5 minutes.  We do have a dishwasher but I just handwash my bottles for Libby since I have to hand wash my pump parts.

  • Awesome, thanks ladies!

I'm going to go with regular cotton or wool washable breast pads instead of the LilyPadz (Lori, good point about bigger bewbs!), and skip the bottle sterilizer. I didn't think we really needed a sterilizer, but it's one of those things that's on all of the "need to buy" lists so I wasn't sure...but then, there's a fair amount of stuff on those lists that I'm skipping since they're really not necessities anyway lol.

  • Lisa, I find that my breasts don't leak very much.  I had bought a costco sized pack and I'm not sure if I'll even use them now.  Maybe just buy a small package until you know if you're going to be leaky.

This is what I'm planning on for now - there are some cheap (but surprisingly well reviewed online) cotton ones on sale at my local Target right now. I thought I'd just pick up a pack of those (2 pair) and see how things go. If I need more later I can always get them then, right? Smile

  • no idea on the breast pads, but I called and asked the pedi about sterilizing and they told me no.... our water is fine to wash bottles in. :)
  • i agree with everyone else... i use cloth nursing pads, i would be afraid that those lily pads cause clogged ducts if they prevent the milk from coming out?? i don't know... but i do leak a lot... not a ton but enough to soak through my top if i don't have a pad in place...sometimes up to 0.25oz from a boob

for sterilizing i think some things they recommend sterilizing out of the box in boiling water but after the first use you can hand wash. we don't give a lot of bottles so hand washing isn't a big deal. medela also makes these great sterilizing bags...you put your pump parts in them and pop them in the microwave and it sterilizes everything...each bag is good for 100 uses and they are pretty cheap from what i understand. the LC told me about them at the hosp but i never got around to trying them but have seen them mentioned on the BFing board.

can you ask your mom to bring some ultimate crib sheets over for you?

I'm going to check with her, but I honestly don't know - she's already bringing over the stroller and a few other things, plus some bulky stuff that she's made/bought (like some quilts). I don't know how much more room she has in her luggage lol!
