Tomatoes: canned vs. boxed

Do you know if tomatoes packaged in lined cardboard-like boxes are any better in terms of BPA than canned?

Re: Tomatoes: canned vs. boxed

  • I think I remember reading somewhere that Tetrapak (I think those are the boxes) don't contain BPA.

I haven't been able to find tomatoes in boxes:-(

Trader Joe's used to have them (our closest is 2hr away) but then they disappeared from shelves. I was beyond geeked to see them at my local Italian grocery store (imported, but contain just *tomatoes*) and wanted to make sure I wasn't super-excited for no reason. :D

And while some may come in and tell me to can my own, that's just not likely. I'm a terrible gardener and do not have the time/desire to improve. :)

  • I plan to can tomatoes bought at the farmer's market this summer.

I'm missing canned tomatoes terribly right now, but we decided to go can-free back in january.  It hasn't been winter without chili.

This is what we're going to do too.  We are eating canned tomatoes until then though.

If the boxes are imported I would say there's no BPA.  Only American poisons ourselves the way we do Tongue Tied, I think BPA is banned in the EU (I assume the tomatoes came from Italy?).

Ooh, that's a good tip. I don't know why I hadn't thought to check at the italian grocery near us!

  • I think my Shoprite has tomatoes in a box...called Pomi.  I have not been buying cans b/ of BPA- so this might be a good option.

    That's *exactly* what I got :)

  • I think the boxed is a good option - here's a link talking about BPA free tomatoes.
