Caring for wood kitchen stuff...

So I remember a while go someone mentioned something about never immersing wood in water. So...how do you wash it? We never had wood in my house growing up and we have a wood cutting board now, that I've always thrown in the dishwasher Embarrassed woops. I didn't realize you weren't supposed to. I want to phase out our plastic utensils and pick something like this up: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=748&f=27519

The instructions say 'Hand Wash' --- what's the difference between hand washing and throwing them in the dishwasher? Aren't both ways covering them in water?

So someone please school me on wood and how to care for it...and why you're not supposed to immerse it in water! Thanks!

PS - We also have a wooden rolling pin that I used the first time the other day --- I remembered that I wasn't supposed to put it in the dishwasher, so I didn't :)

Re: Caring for wood kitchen stuff...

  • hand washing and rinsing with water is fine, just dont soak it in water.
  • Ditto pp's, I try not to soak them and I don't put them in the dishwasher, but I wash them as normal. Almost exactly like my knives.

  • I'm going with PPs but, I wanted to add that over time they will start to look a bit dry.  Just lube them up with a light coating of mineral oil.  I'm also used veggie and olive oil before I discovered mineral oil.

I'm not sure how healthy it is, but we had a rolling pin get moldy after MIL put it through the dw every day for a weekand DH just sanded the mold off.  I sprayed it down with vinegar and we went on with our lives until one of our dogs found it while we were moving.

    I have those utensils!  =)

I wash them by hand (we don't have a dishwasher) and they are in pretty good shape, with moderate use.  I try to wash them quickly and put them right up to dry so they aren't sitting in water.

However, I also have the Bambu salad bowl from C&B, treated it the same way, and it's already shot.  Used like 4 times since August.  They don't sell it anymore, from what I can find.
