Want to peel my skin off!

So I've never had hives before in my life, not ever.  But for the past three days now I've had them and today was worse then the past two combined.  I can't figure out what from.  I took a benadryl today which made me feel 75% less itchy, but it also knocked me out.  I slept for 3.5 hours!  Amazing nap, but clearly this isn't a long term solution.

I know if I go to the dr. they're just going to say, "Did you change your soap? Laundry detergent?  Eat anything unusual?" No, nothing has changed which is why I can't figure it out.

I'm hoping one of you has a cure for me.  Please?  This is on top of my eczema that I've had for three years.  It's itch on top of itch!

Re: Want to peel my skin off!

  • This might sound random but Aloe Vera helps my itchy rashes. Maybe it will help with hives? And my mom (a nurse) says the best thing to do is take an antihistamine (sp?) like Claritin and some Benadryl. It should cure the hives and stop the itch.

As for the cause...I got nothing. lol

  • i have had 2 instances like this in the past few years. the first time i didnt even bother with the dr, though one night they got so bad i almost went to the ER (they were raised and my entire body was covered in hives that were melting together), but i opted to take some benedryl and wait it out and it reduced. it lasted for about a week or so. never figured out what it was. after a few days or so the hives went away, but not the itching.

the second time i had a horrific ordeal with the itching. i tried everything, rewashed my clothes, everything i could think of. one night i was talking to a friend and mentioned that i swore the itching was not so bad during the day, but horrific at night and causing me to not sleep. i finally started googling and found that scabes had those symptoms (worse at night). i went to the dr and sure enough, i had scabes. a kid i had been seeing had the same itching ordeal, so we figured one of us had it first and passed it to the other. scabes can be caught by a simple handshake, and he was working at the airport at the time so i had a feeling he caught it from a passenger and then gave it to me. it sucked. i had to put a lotion all over my body for 14 hrs then wash it off.

not sure that helps, unless of course your itching is worse at night..then maybe it helps! good luck with the itching. i hate that!

  • I "randomly" hive sometimes (Same thing, I always use the same soaps and detergents, it never happens after eating something new), usually taking a Benadryll and waiting 30 minutes works for me. I also use the "dye free" ones instead of the "pink" pills ... not sure if that would make any difference (I'm not sure what you used, but it sounds like it didn't agree with you).

I also have used Aveeno oatmeal bath (Like what you use for the chicken pox) in the past, and that's also been good to me.

  • One time I had really horrible hives that were about 3/4 inch in diameter all over my body because i had eaten so much seafood in one day (sushi, lobster, scallops, shrimp, salmon...yeah, in one day hahaha)....and I remember taking benadryll, and it did help until they went away....could you try another brand of antihystemine (sp?) ?

I also agree with meg that aveeno might help....maybe some calamine lotion? I also know that benadryll makes a topical cream for itchy stuff....and there are tons of brands that have the same.

     goodluck!

  • Wow, thanks for all the responses!  I feel like my issue is the opposite of Jrsys scabes.  I don't itch when I'm sleeping at night, but they usually start up within an hour of me getting up and out of the shower.  The benadryl didn't really give me an adverse reaction, it just made me sleep for a long time.  In the end it worked.  It was the pink pill, but I don't know what the difference between the colors of the benadryl pills would have to do with it?

DH thinks it might be psychosomatic.

It bothers me a bit because for the the past five years or so it seems like every Dr. I've been to has been telling me that everything that's wrong with me is psychosomatic.  I don't know what to think.

  • I used to get hives in HS when I was really stressed out. I always put a hydrocortisone cream on and took an anti-histamine and it seemed to help pretty well. The only other time I got them was during a particularly bad spring because of airborn allergies. Maybe because you're in a new area there are all sorts of allergens that you're not used to?
  • also - this may be a "duh" thing and you've already eliminated it, but I am super SUPER allergic to fleas and if I'm bitten it looks like hives/welts. I know you have a new furbaby down there, so check her really well and make sure that's not the issue.
  • Thanks for the tips Musgral, I was wondering if there was something in the air here.  And Mittens is going to the v-e-t today for some immunizations and we're going to have her checked for fleas.  I didn't see anything on her when I poked around.  And DH isn't itchy, so it's probably not fleas or bed bugs.  (Thank God, those things are foul!)
