How did you come up with your pet's name?

My dog's name is Sam. I adopted him when he was about 4 months old and he already had that name. He was foster cared for and was already used to responding to the name plus I thought it was kind of cute for him.

Looking back my pets have all had "people" names. We had a family dog named Beverly (my parents named her) and I had three cats, Fred (after Fred Flinstone...I was only 5 when I named him and Fred Flinstone was my favorite cartoon at the time), Mindy (after Mindy from the Mork and Mindy show...again I was a kid) and Samantha (can't remember how I came up with that one). I even had a cow named Dolly (you guessed it after Dolly Parton). I grew up on a farm and my dad bought two calves for my brother and I to bottle feed and raise.

How did you come up with your pet's name?

Re: How did you come up with your pet's name?

  • Dixie (our cat) = A character from my favorite soap...All My Children and the name definately suites her.

Goku, pronounced GO-KOO (M's cat, probably soon to be our cat) = Hubs used to be obsessed with an anime called "Dragonball Z" and that is one of the characters names.  However we've determined that he should have went with something Russian, we think if he were a human, he would have a Russian accent.

Yes, we are crazy and think about what our cats/who our cats would be if they were humans.

  • Jezzabelle was found during a Mardi Gras parade downtown.  She was a street walkin little tot.  Nuff said.

Daisy was my mom's favorite flower and it just fit for her since she was so cute and dainty and white.

  • I named Bella when we got her.  Before getting another puppy after my previous dog passed away, I looked up names online and settled on a few I thought were cute.  When we found Bella, there was no question...that name just worked for her.  She totally looks like a Bella, and the name suits her to a "t," if that makes any sense.

My previous dog was named Fluffy because she was an American Eskimo dog and was all white and fluffy.  I was 3 when we got her....my name suggestions were Snowball and Snow White.  My Dad gently turned them down and came up with Fluffy LOL.

Before Fluffy we had a puppy named Dusty.  I don't know if my parents named her that or if she came with that name though.

  • Cole & Ebony - are black dogs.  DH's ex-wife named them.

Cartman the tabby cat got his name b/c of an inside joke with DH and his coworkers - and South Park.

Jack Sparrow the black & white cat got his name partly fromthe shelter and partly from us.  He was dropped off at the shelter as "Sparrow" a girl kitty...but he's really a boy kitty, so when we got him we thought his goatee warranted the name Jack Sparrow like the Pirate.

Pregnancy Hypertension - inductions at 39w, I grow big babies: DD was 9 pounds 1 ounce 22 inches, DS was 11 pounds even 22 inches - both vaginal deliveries
  • DH and I named Penny, because we found her under a huge safe and she was so small.

Snap's name before I got him was Snapshot, cause the lady said he was so quick like a flash, so I just shortend it to Snap.

Cash had his name when we got him. But sometimes I call him Clifford because he's red and likes to lick like a dog. So he's Clifford my big red dog.

Yuma, DH's horse, means "son of a chief" and his father's name is Chief.

  • Riggs (our king Charles Cavalier) DH favorite movie , Lethal weapon. Detective Riggs.

Sawyer(our Yorkie) LOST!! We almost named him Murtaugh from lethal weapon, but being the dog is black we did not want to seem racist, lol....

  • We had a dog named Ditto because he looked like our other dog. It was fun because we could sing, "Do a ditty ditty dum ditty doo!" He loved it.

Mandy our current aussie got her name because she looks like a panda . . . Mandy Pandy. We sing her the Barry Manilow song.

Bella was named after something in "Life is Beautiful" I think.

Bud . . . Bud just is a bud. We call him Bud Lite because he's a tiny chihuahua.

  • imageSierra&Lee:

Cash had his name when we got him. But sometimes I call him Clifford because he's red and likes to lick like a dog. So he's Clifford my big red dog.

Sierra - at the barn where I ride the biggest horse is Tater (Sweet Potato Paisano) and he has the red copper penny coloring to him so I always call him Tater the big red horse

As for my pets I'm had many so to keep this short I'll just name the ones that live with me and DH.

Sandy - our beagle/corgi mix, came from the shelter with this name

Sugar - our cat is mostly white and when I adpoted her I already had one cat named honey so Sugar seemed to fit.

Kieran - our black lab, DH found the name, he liked it because Kieran is Gaelic for black.

Now I have this song in my head... I used to LUV Barry!

Growing up- Ralph-not sure where that name came from, but I was 4.  Muffin-the dog.. she was a mutt...   OJ-the cat (he was orange and we had two breakfast named animals!)

Ellie was Ellie before I knew her.  That fit her.. prob like Veruca's 'Bella'...

Sis had 'Sammy'-whose orig name was 'Sharky', but they didn't like that and wanted something close.

  • I tend to name things after colors.

Ginger - Orange & White JRT
    Bianca - White Cockatiel
Rawlings - Baseball Glove color (J named him) Staffy mix

    Former pets
Creole (Dog with a black dad and a white mom that my dad named)
Luna - White and grey Cockatiel
Midori (japanese for green, Green-cheeked conure)
    Tigre (Gray, Tiger-striped Tabby)

and of course, Scarlett, who is not a pet, but still has a color name

We adoped a couple of black stray cats that we named Diamonds and Woodpecker after their sparkly eyes and tapping on the door.  Tigre had kittens once and the one we kept we named Claude, which fittingly meant "one who is lame"

J had a couple of orange cats named Jabroni (Something the Rock said) and Wizard, I think

  • imageJackandCassie:

We had a dog named Ditto because he looked like our other dog. It was fun because we could sing, "Do a ditty ditty dum ditty doo!" He loved it.

We had a dog named Rerun for this same reason.

  • When we adopted out first cat, he had the name Sarge which DH and I hated. So we change it to Toby bc he seemed like we would be a quiet, lazy cat which reminded us of Toby in the office. And Toby seems to have a similar personality to that charater.

Our second cat we always say adopted us. Since we wound up on our door step, we had no idea what his name was. We decided to call him Guster from our favorite show Psych.

  • current cats: Gossamer was a little puffball, so we named him after the hairy guy in bugs bunny cartoons and also the meaning of the word. His nickname is "kitten" even though he's almost 2 years old!

Symon - we just liked the name. I had been to the UK a few months before and the one van driver was named Simon. Now it's "Symon the Fat" or Fatty or Fatty Pig Fatty lol!

previous pets: I could go on all day, I grew up on a farm and had literally hundreds of pets, but here are a few:

Valentine the dog - got her for Vday from my dad. Val for short.
Jean Luc the cat - I don't know, I was into France...
Kielbasa the cat - gorgeous white cat with blue eyes, but he was feral and really firey/mean. i wasn't able to tame him unfortunately, and he disappeared.
Velcro the cat - just thought it was a fun name
Shasta the cat - when i was in the hospital as a kid, the brand of soda i drank all the time was shasta lemon lime!
Cloudy, Rainy, Hazy, and Foggy the bunnies - they were variations of white & gray
Fluffernutter the bunny - he was tan & white
Einstein the mouse - he was white
Boris & Itzska the russian dwarf hamsters
Saphira the anole (lizard) after the dragon in the Eragon series

  • Carter - After Dr. Carter from ER.  *Swoon*

Wrigley - DH is a Cubs fan.

Childhood Pet: Roscoe the dog after Pippi Longstocking's dog!

  • Animals growing up:

Tabitha (cat) - I was in kindergarten, so I don't remember, but we always called her Kitty

Bud and Sadie (golden retriever/black lab/newfoundland mix dogs) - my little sister picked Sadie's name because it means princess. . . My dad picked Bud's name. He said he looked like he should be named Bud :P.

    Current pets:

Milo (black and white kitty) - came with that name. He belonged to my old roommate, and didn't adjust well when she got dogs, so we took him.

Mouse (grey kitty) - he's grey, he's squeaky, and when we first got him he was really skittish (not anymore!).

  • Sheri! Our cat Dora "talks" with a russian accent as well. We call her Dee Doo which totally fits into her Russian accent! LOL

Dora-The hubs adopted her and that was the name they gave her.

Cash-Also the hubs cat...not sure why he named him that

Tuki-My cat that my MIL found on the street, he was barely 3 weeks old. She named him after her brothers cat Tuki.

I let DH name Ladmo, because he had never had a dog before and I thought it would be good bonding if dh got to name him. Ladmo was the name of a local az childrens morning show http://www.wallaceandladmo.com/ Its funny, because unless you grew up in az in the late 70's early 80's you dont know what Ladmo means...so when we go out with im and people ask his name it is easy for us to weed out who is a native and who isnt.

  • Irving (cat)- Our neighbors kept their daughter's dog, Kirby while she and her husband were stationed in Japan.  My mom was convinced the whole time he lived with them that his name was Irving.  We call him Irvie or Scurfie Scurf (somehow went from calling him Irvie the Scurvie to Scurfie)

Oliver (cat)- I was trying to decide between the names Simon and Oliver and settled on Oliver.  We call him Ollie, Ollie Cat or the Fat Cat (he weighs about 17lbs.)

  • We got our doberman from DH's co-worker who decided she was "too much work" Uh hello, did you NOT realize dobermans need LOTS and LOTS of attention?!?  He used to keep her in a kennel all day in the basement and then wonder why she was BSC when he let her out at night in the house.  So sad!  He had named her "Nika", we kept it b/c it seemed to suit her regal and yet fierce persona.  He says he got the name from some doberman website.  Another one of DH's coworkers got a female from the same litter, and her name is Java. They're both red/fawn colored dobermans.

Growing up I had a huskie/black lab female named "Candy" (my sisters and I decided on that), then a male terrier named "Benji" (named by the shelter) and then a female rat terrier/australian cattle/who knows mix named
"Tess" (also named by the shelter)
