How much do you give the bride and groom?

We're going to a wedding in 2 weeks. The reception is at the Marriott in downtown Charlotte. I'm not sure how much to give. In NJ, where I'm from, we try to give enough to cover our meals, which up north can be $$$$. But down here I'm not sure. For our wedding (in NC) we got anywhere from $20, up to $200....

eta: If it makes a difference, the groom is a co-worker of DH's. We hardly ever socialize with them outside of work.

Re: How much do you give the bride and groom?

  • I would probably give $100 to $150ish.  Probably more on the $100 side since he is a co-worker and not necessarily a good friend.
  • I feel like 25 to 50 is a good amount unless you are really close to the bride and groom then give them more. But personally I would stick with 25 to 50 $

Thanks! No names yet. We have a few we like, but we'll start really discussing them after we find out the sex on the 24th.

  • $100 is usually what we give.

  • If they are close friends we usually give $100, and $50 for couples we don't know too well.
  • IMO, the "cover your plate" thing is really more of a northeastern tradition than a southern one.  I've never been to a single wedding where I've considered that in selecting the give.  But then again, I'd never give a co-worker, with whom I didn't socialize, a gift worth $100 and especially not that much in cash!  I'm pretty sure the sum total of all the gifts I got my sister and my BFF's for their weddings (wedding gift, shower gifts, etc.) barely exceeded $100.  I've never spent more than $50 on a more casual friend.

That being said, if your budget allows a gift of $100, I think that's more than generous.

  • We generally give/spend $50 on people we're not close to and $100 to people we are close to. To our closest friends we give money & a gift.
  • We've given between $50-200. For a coworker, I'd give $50.
  • if it were me i'd give $50 or a $50 gift card

I'm from the Northeast and I had never, ever heard of this.  I've only heard about this concept on the knot/nest.  It's not something I would ever consider doing.

I base wedding gifts on our budget and how well we know the couple, so we don't really had a set of standards.
