XP from military newlyweds, need info on Ft. Hood

Austin is 60+ miles from Fort Hood right? I'm hoping to get some information and hoping you ladies can help!

My best friend is moving to Fort Hood and is a little hesitant at this point. She is going to be working on base, but is not military. What can you tell me about the quality of life there? Where are the best areas to live (I think Killeen is close by right?). I know she would rent initially but then look intro buying a house. It is just her and her dog :)

Thanks in advance! I'm hoping you ladies can help me to help put her at ease :)  I'm thinking she is concerned about not having anything to do down in TX. She has told me before she thinks she will be bored.

Re: XP from military newlyweds, need info on Ft. Hood

  • I spent a little time in Killeen while my husband was working there, so maybe I can help a little. Ft. Hood/Killeen really is pretty close to Austin...you can get to the northside and everything a big city has to offer in less than an hour. Killeen essentially surrounds the post, and most of it is your average soldier town -- pretty old and grungy, but there are some decent spots to live. My husband lived at Keystone Apartments and was very happy there, and I think Copper Mountain Apartments across the street looked nice, too. It was close to shopping and not terribly far from post. Hope that helps!
  • PP is right - I can't really speak much for Killeen/Ft Hood - but  I do know that the Round Rock Outlet Malls, Ikea, etc are ~ 45 min away.

There are a few wineries north of Austin too (blanking on names), but make great day trips.

The Austin area (and north of Austin) also got great hiking, lakes, etc - so there's plenty of things to do!  We have several friends that lived in Ft. Hood and would come into Austin a lot on the weekends.

  • I live in Temple which is about 30 minutes away from Ft Hood, give or take depending on which gate you use.

I really wouldn't advise living in Killeen.  Some people are happy there, but I like to pretend that part of town doesn't exist.  There are some nice areas but its still surrounded by nasty parts of town.  Don't even go near Copperas Cove.  DH lived there for a few years, and he doesn't even like me to drive through that town.

Harker Heights is nice.  They've recently added a lot of shopping to Harker Heights, so it would be a good spot for a single gal.  I like the Belton/Temple area better but we have kids, so its a little different.

  • DH used to live in Harker Heights.  Easy commute to Ft. Hood.  Your close to shopping in Temple, Waco or Austin. I also would not live in Killeen proper.

What is she going to be doing?

  • I live in belton which is about 20 minutes east of Killeen. Like pp, I would not recommend living in Killeen. I actually work about 5 minutes from the clear creek gate of fort hood and my morning commute (with ft hood am traffic) is about 25-30 minutes. If I were a single gal, I would choose belton/temple first; harker heights second. Harker heights is fairly new and thriving. • I live in the northern part of Georgetown and we have a ton of neighbors who are stationed or work at Ft. Hood.  In fact, we bought our house from a guy who was stationed there.  Check out the Berry Creek Country Club area, Villages of Berry Creek and Georgetown Village.

Georgetown is close enough to Ft. Hood to be an easy commute and close enough to Round Rock and Austin to keep you from getting bored.  It's a nice town with shopping, restaurants and lots to do on it's own.   (Those wineries are nearby too!)
