Brand new house...and my floors need to be replaced?!

Ugh...I need to vent. I am anxious and angry all at the same time. We selected pretty pricey carpet and hard surface flooring for the house. We figured that it was an investment for the long term, we even upgraded the underlay (sub floor and carpet pad). Plus, we chose products that were more earth friendly and made of natural materials, which added to the cost.

As soon as we moved into the house we noticed a few issues with the flooring. The carpet upstairs started stretching, and stretching and stretching! We?ve had it re-stretched and stapled twice so far and it?s still stretching! The lumps and bumps are so big I?ve actually tripped on them. Crazy, no one has seen anything like it.

On the main floor, I started noticing that the sub floor seams started to show through the flooring. It?s weird, though, that only the seams running north/south are showing??? My theory is that their install crew was divided up and whoever did these seams wasn?t as qualified as the rest, maybe?

On Friday 2 reps from the flooring company came to take a look and agreed that I have cause for complaint. My contractor totally blew off the meeting! WTF?! The LAST in a string of unprofessional behaviour. I called all of the subs and told them that they were to deal only with his business partner from now on re: all issues of our property. They were all totally relieved as he?s a total jerk and very difficult to deal with. Today I am meeting with the owner of the flooring company and 2 reps (one for each of the manufacturers of our flooring) to sort out what the problem is.

Bottom line? ALL of my flooring needs to be replaced, including the entire sub floor on the main floor! SOMEONE SHOOT ME! This is a huge job, and the enormity of it is making me nauseas. Not to mention the fact that all of the ?green? materials we used are garbage now, totally defeating the purpose of our attempts to reduce waste. I am so upset.

Re: Brand new house...and my floors need to be replaced?!

  • OMG that sucks HUUUGE!  Such a pain to deal with floors being ripped up and replaced so soon.

Can any of the materials be recycled?  Then at least it's not so bad for the enviro.

  • The Arteca (hard flooring) is recycleable so, hopefully, that will not be wasted. I am not sure about the carpet. It's mostly wool, and is a soft back carpet so it doesn't have all the plastic in it that others do. I should see if there is a way to avoid it going to the landfill. Such a shame.
  • Wow.  That is terrible.  I would take 15 minutes for a good cry.  And then open a bottle of wine.  Who cares if it's before noon?
  • omg, I would be devastated too... what a waste of so many resources. alcohol before noon is totally acceptable in this situation!
  • Do you own a punching bag?
  • Damn, that would piss me off ...

  • Your house falls under the new house warranty doesn't it?  Hopefully you will get everything fixed for free.

  • i would freecycle the carpet.  There will be someone out there that will use it to lay down in an unfinished basement or play house floor or cut it down for area rugs by a door etc.

    But UGH.
