WASHINGTON - Congressional leaders, with advice from their parties' presidential nominees, scrambled Tuesday to come up with changes that will allow them to sell the failed $700 billion financial bailout to rank-and-file members.
-------------
This article says changes include raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000 and changing the mark-to-market accounting rule (!) for the conservatives, and extending unemployment benefits and banning some forms of short selling for the left.
For the record banning short selling is a terrible idea and extending unemployement is a stupid gimmick/pandering. But we'll see what actually makes it in the final bill.
Also included in this article is this: "Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., told MSNBC he did not base his "no" vote on Pelosi's remarks, adding, "I don't know a single Republican who did."
Re: They're still working....
You know what I think happened? Reps never supported this bill but agreed to go along with it anyway b/c the Dems caved on a few of the worst parts of their drafts. Then the voting started, a bunch of Dems were voting "no" and the Reps realized they were only asked to vote yes b/c the Dems needed cover from the irate public that hates this bill. So they just said, "screw it. why should I pass a bill I don't like just so the Dems aren't the only ones holding the hot potato?"
Just a theory.
Awesome!!!
I agree. I think the Pelosi thing was an excuse for a bill that was not supported. There were 95 Dems that did not support it and, within that, a majority of the Black Caucus. Pretty telling, imo.
Pelosi is not much of a leader, though, and made an assinine move with the bashing in her speech so I think it was an easy blame.
whatever though, you know they were stalking us and realized they needed to start working once they saw how upset we all were !!!!!
