Update about my dog re: crate

Some of you might remember I was having the issue w/ the our dog, who we crate during the day and at night, waking us up in the middle of the night whining? Anyway, we moved her crate to our room that night it seems to be working well, except for the fact the crate takes up a good bit of real estate.  She no longer whines during the middle of the night and doesn't wake us up until 7-8 on weekends which is very nice. We also bought an extra baby gate and are experimenting with leaving her gated in our kitchen while we are gone for shorter increments. Our hesitation with leaving her all day like that is she still has access to a window and floor mats that she previously chewed up, but she's done well so we might start trusting her more with this arrangement. Anyway, just figured I'd update since many of you took the time to give advice :)

Re: Update about my dog re: crate

  • When Jake was a pup, I tied his leash to my bed and put a dog bed on the floor for him.  That way he couldn't go on walk-about in the middle of the night, and couldn't jump on the bed either.

Glad things are working out for you guys.

  • That's a great idea, Speed, we might give that a try. Squirt loves her dog bed and I bet if she could move around a little she wouldn't be as inclined to rip it up like she did the last one we put in her crate. And that way she couldn't chase the cats. Though I could see her chewing on the leash..hmmm
  • Thanks for the update!  I'm glad you found something that worked.  I completely understand about being cautious to trust your dog.  When I was almost comfortable with letting Rudy roam freely when we were away, I mentioned it to DH.  He then told me he had been leaving Rudy alone fo up to 4 hours during the day! Indifferent  But I guess the good news was there were no major disasters.  GL!  I hope Squirt will behave himself!
  • Yay, I am so glad things are going better! We had Mia's crate up for about 1.5 years after we got her. For the first 8-10 months we locked her in it every night, but after that we left it open and she slept in there anyway. Then we replaced it with a bed and she's done fine with that ever since.

You'll know if she's chewing on the leash.  Plus you've established Bedtime, so she'll probably get it.  Also, like Jenny said, after a while you might be able to start transitioning her.  My dogs took FOREVER to be completely free of crates.  They ate a sofa when Ben was 2.

  • It occured to me while I was out on a run that we have a plasticy lead that would probably be perfect for tying her up and I don't think she'd chew on it. A lot of the issue of her staying out arise from our cats and her interest in them. Part of the reason we got her was b/c she had been in a foster w/ a cat and ignored it, but this wasn't the case with our cats. She's not aggressive towards them, just very interested and follows them around constantly trying to sniff their butts.  Plus, one of our cats is kind of douchy and I'm pretty sure he purposely instigates *** with her. She's gotten soooo much better over the past year and a half so I'm hopeful that eventually she won't care what they are doing and we can leave her out, but for now we just have to wait it out.

  • I'm glad that things have been going better! Ellie's nearly 3 and she still stays in her crate when we're not home- she gets all up on the furniture and stands up on the windowsills (scratching the stained wood) if she's allowed to stay out while we're gone. So don't feel too bad about still having her in her crate! It sounds like she's much happier now being in your room at night!
  • I'm glad things are going better. Our dog actually loves his crate. When we watch tv at night, sometimes he'll just go into his crate to go to bed for the night (the crate is in our room). I think he thinks of it as his own bedroom.

  • That's great news!  I know it was causing you some stress and sleepless nights.  I hope things continue to get better.
