Insane Weekend Project

This past weekend we stumbled upon a great deal at Costco on bulbs.  DH and I are horrible gardeners, but I love colorful plants.  So we decided bulbs would be a good long-term solution to giving our yard a pop of color.  So we ended up buying 576 bulbs!!!!  Now these are to be planted in our flower beds in the front of our house and in the back (which is over 50 feet of bed).  I still think we have way too many, but the total bill was only $150.  I took Friday off of work to help DH plant them.  I think we are crazy!

And if you have any tips for planting bulbs that non-gardeners should know, please pass them along!

    Holy crap...lol

I'm not a gardner by any means, so no advice here. When we planted flowers last year, DH and his dad did it all. I have a black thumb. =)

    Good luck!

  • what all did you buy?

2 years ago i did the same thing, had roughly 700 bulbs.  in order to mass plant, it was easiest to have DH dig trenches (usually 6" deep) and i came behind and set them in place and covered them back up, ensuring they stayed upright.  i would do 3-4 rows at a time so i could alternate them:

     x x

    and so on.

when i did the second round, summer/fall bulbs, i didn't have nearly as many and i dug out 6" deep areas, roughly 5' square.  i'd plant the bulbs and slowly lay the dirt back over so i didn't knock them over.  to help with not knock them over, it helped to loosen the soil underneath and get them firmly in the top 1/2" or so.

keep a log/drawing of what you do so you don't wonder next year what you have :)

  • Thanks for the recommendations, Charch!  I not really sure of any of the names.  All of the flowers in the back are all red/pink/orange.  We got something that goes 5 feet tall (gladiola's I think) to line across the back of our flower beds.  And we have some ones that are 2-3 feet tall for the middle of the bed.  And then a reblooming yellow flower to go in the front.  Our beds are deeper than usual (3-6 feet), so I think the different layers of plants will look nice.

In the front we got a white/pink flower that blooms early summer, another flower in varied colors that blooms throughout the summer and some purple/yellow flower that blooms late summer.  We are all under 18 inches since they will go underneath and in front of our bushes.  I'm hoping they provide color for quite a while with the staggered blooming.

Trenchs sound like a great way to go!  And I didn't think of drawing a picture, but that makes a lot of sense.

  • when you plant below the bushes, be prepared for growth.  that was my biggest mistake; our bushes were small at the time and i didn't think far enough into the future, so i had to move about 100 or so last year.

we also have a lot of depth in our beds, we have several layers of plants!

    GL!!
