Growing up, my mom worked 30+ miles away from home. Because she was a single mom and most family lived out of state, she always had a plan in case a disaster were to occurr. When I was younger I thought it was rather normal to plan where we would go, who we would call, etc.
Well my mom just emailed me to update our "Emergency Plans". It was basically the same sort of thing with an addition. She wants me to ask my in-laws if anything were to happen, if she could walk to their house since they live a 1/2 mile from her. Then she wants me and Eric to make our way down there. Whaaa? Am I totally lame for thinking this is a very odd plan? I mean, yes I'd want to know if her, my brother and my sister's family were okay. But this whole thing seems rather strange.
So question for you, do you have a disaster plan with family outside of your home or is my family just whacked out? If so what is it?
Re: Disaster Plans?
That doesn't sound so strange to me. Maybe your IL's will be like "what??" but really... if it gives your mom peace of mind, then I don't see where it would hurt to ask.
DH has talked about this, we keep saying we're going to make one, but then we never do it. He also wants to have an Emergency Kit with food/water/clothing/supplies/money in our house, and something small in each of our cars. I feel like that is a bit overboard but you never know what can happen. Especially since we live in an earthquake area and there have been a lot of big ones lately. Who knows. As we saw with Haiti, cash is king. So it wouldn't hurt to have a small stash of money available in the off chance that a disaster strikes and we don't have power (access to cc machines, atm's, etc).
probably not a bad idea where you live...
This - exactly. . . .
