Apt. Update

I finally heard back from the owners of our apt. complex today.  They didn't know the extent of everything we were going through because the caretaker just summarized everything going on from their side, leaving out some details.  They talked to the caretaker and let her know they were contacted by us and are putting into place a new checklist with stricter requirements for move-in condition.  They also did contact the police about the drugs in the original apt. and are going to ensure that it is properly cleaned.

They did not offer us any money for the inconvenience, but said that if our rent check arrives late (because we mail them in) they would waive late fees and they acknowledged that they did owe us some favors.  I don't anticipate us needing late fees waived but it's a nice gesture.  She was very glad that we contacted her because she said that is not the way they want their place run and appreciate being able to make sure others have a better experience.  I'm glad because at least we have it all on record and won't be as worried about our deposit when we move out.

Re: Apt. Update

  • That's good the owner finally got back to you. I also think that is great that they are going to improve the process of when people move in/out. No one should ever have to go through what you did.  That's too bad that they didn't offer you anything for all your trouble.
  • I'm disappointed they didn't offer financial assistance. If I were you, I would have asked.  In this economy, I doubt most people would freely offer...but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't accommodate a request.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

    This.

And also, I am glad they replied and that you're in a better situation now.

  • We mentioned it from the beginning but it was the caretaker talking to them on our behalf so I think that hurt our chances.  They aren't legally required to compensate us and when we checked into it, it would be a long legal process most likely resulting in us having to move to another place.  DH and I are honestly so tired of moving and don't want to go to court over it so we decided to drop it.

Some friends of ours went through a battle with their landlords and ended up almost evicted because they both lost their jobs around the same time and were less than a week late with rent.  It was basically a retaliation move on the part of the landlord so we are trying not to get in over our heads.

We're just going to do our 12 months and get out but wanted to let them know the true condition of the apt. so we could protect ourselves better when we do move out.

  • I wish they would have at least given you a month free--I mean, you had to move AGAIN because of their error. That is BS.

But at least it's behind you now, glad you're safe!!!

  • PS-love the name you have picked out for your babygirl :)
