are suits really required for interviews?

I have a couple suits but I bought them in 2005.  They don't really fit anymore.

Last time I was interviewing was in Austin 2007.  And I felt silly and overdressed in the offices.  Are suits still required for interviews?  I have an interview on Friday for a Admin/Accounting Assistant.  A/P with a pretty low pay.  Do I need to go out and buy a suit?

Re: are suits really required for interviews?

  • Unless this is the kind of place where the assistants wear suits consistently, no, I don't think so. But you do need to be business professional...slacks or nice skirt and button down shirt are probably the best bet.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

I would say no because it sounds like more of an entry level position.  I would still wear nice slacks/pants/shoes, and a jacket if you have one - if not, I'm sure you'd be fine with a nicer sweater.

    This.

  • I definitely have nice business clothes...I can pull off slacks and sweater with a pair of heels.  Its the jacket I don't have.

    thanks!

I think you'll be fine!  I've worn a suit to some interviews and have felt like a complete putz seeing everyone else in jeans/tee shirts. :/

  • Your outfit sounds great!  And, congrats on getting the interview!
  • It was recommended to me that I wear slacks and a dress shirt and simply carry the suit coat on my arm in the interview.  So I guess it doesn't matter that the coat doesn't fit you but will still look like you showed up in a suit.
