I think you mentioned before that you are a personal trainer.  Maybe you could give me a few suggestions. I want to tone up my legs for summer.  I've been doing squats and lunges.  What are some other easy to do at home exercies?

Thanks!

Re: ~*Chrissy*~

  • How's your diet? That's where you'll see the most benefit. Squats and lunges are both phenomenal for building strength and muscle (especially at home), but if your diet isn't great then you may never SEE the fruits of your labor. The difference between someone who feels in shape and someone who looks in shape is always going to be because of what they eat.

  • Ah yes the diet.  I eat way to much sugar...it's my vice.  I've been trying to get rid of processed foods and eat healthier. I need to incorporate more fresh vegetables and fruits.
  • If you get rid of sugar you'll definitely notice a difference in both the way you look and the way you feel. The single area where you'll get the most bang for your buck is to cut out ALL grains/oats/gluten-filled foods. I promise! If you really want to see/feel results, get rid of the breads, rice, potatoes, etc in your life. Easier said than done, right?!
  • Ah you're killing me! I was just going to ask for some suggestions actually, so thanks for reading my mind.  What the heck is left to eat!?!  Is there a cookbook or website that you follow to get ideas on meals?  I know I should cut out or at least cut back dramatically.  Any good recipes?

  • I could give you specifics of how much to eat and when, but I imagine that'd be a bit too extreme. When I'm really committed to getting beach ready, I eat specific foods and I weigh and measure EVERYTHING. Actually, now that I'm back from this past weekend's G2G I'm setting a goal for myself to be strict on my diet and exercise until I see DH next month. I wanna make him drool Big Smile

I totally get that weighing/measuring isn't practical for everyone, so here's a good rule of thumb:

"Eat meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, SOME fruit, little [natural] sugar, and no starch"

  • What about complex carbs?
  • Haha!  I need all the help I can get! The problem is to convince M that this is good for him too.  I know he wants to lose weight.  I told my FIL (we work together) some of the stuff you told me since we eat lunch together and so he asked me to see about the complex carbs.  He exercies but doesn't see the results.

  • As for what I eat (when I'm good), I generally eat very simply and don't think too much about developing recipes. There are some creative recipes out there, but the easiest way for me to maintain is to not have to think too much about my food. Lunch and dinner are usually the same (I cook enough dinner for lunch leftovers the next day): Take 3-5 ounces of whatever your choice of meat, prepared however you want, put that on a normal sized dinner plate, and FILL the rest of the plate with fruits and vegetables.

I'll usually do something like, chicken breast + broccoli + asparagus + a peach for dessert

    or...

Grilled fish topped with avocado + side salad + squash/zucchini + mixed berries for dessert

Breakfast is usually some sort of omelet or greek yogurt w/nuts and berries and maybe whey protein.

Also, allow yourself one day a week to eat whatever you feel like. I like to save Saturday for that day.

  • imagemofe:
    What about complex carbs?

I'd say to avoid them if you can. All of them.

I'm about to get a little science-y here, brace yourself! Complex carbs illicit a much higher insulin spike than simple carbs do. Insulin response comes from carbs and is responsible for pumping energy into your cells. Glucagon response is induced by protein and is responsible for pulling energy out of the cells (in the form of glucose). The goal is to get a pretty balanced ratio of insulin/glucagon. When you do this, you are in effect converting your body to using fat as a primary energy source, therefore burning fat and optimizing cellular operation through proper insulin/glucagon balance, which means plenty of energy to do whatever you're up to in life.

You can lose weight and feel great doing it. All you have to do is portion balance!

The "Golden Ratio" is 1/3 protein and 2/3 carbs (with a little bit of healthy fat thrown in the mix).

  • Thank you so much.  This really helps a lot. I feel so overwhelmed sometimes with trying to figure out what to eat to stay healthy and not just lose weight. Those are some great ideas and I will have to give them a try.

I also weigh daily and was thinking about doing measurements.  I know if I work out that my weight won't go down, but my body will notice the difference.

    Thanks! Big Smile

  • When I say weigh and measure, I mean your food not your body!

Don't get on the scale. Throw it away. Pay attention to how you feel and how your clothes fit. The numbers will frustrate you every time! When I'm at my leanest, I still weigh almost the exact same as I do when I'm soft and pudgy.

  • Haha okay throw away the scale!
