If you're thinking of using Mirena..

Just got back from my Dr and discussing longer terms of BC. Mirena seemed like the option I wanted to go through and then when I asked about costs at the front desk, they explained that they just doubled the cost on March 1st!

I guess they used to ship directly to the Dr and then they do the procedure. Now they ship it to you and it's only covered by 5% of insurance companies across the country. It's only like $1000 but still more than I thought. The Dr said it'll probably be better in 2011, um that's like 10 months, lol. Wish I would have taken care of this 5 months ago =( But anyways, it seems like a great product

Re: If you're thinking of using Mirena..

  • Thanks for the info! I actually talked to my doctor for like 30 seconds about it at my appt. last month (which has now lead me to realize I need a new doctor - my ENTIRE exam was approximately 3 mins. long).  She only gave me the pamphlets on Mirena and another IUD and I left having no idea how much it would be or how I would go about getting it - she left too fast for me to realize that she never told this to me or for me to ask!  I had no idea that it would be so expensive.  Hard since my BCPs are $5/month.
  • I paid $183 for mine two (almost three) years ago and my coworker only had to pay her $20 copay for it a few months ago.  That stinks!  But still if it is 1000, that works out to less then $20 a month which is what I was paying for BCP.

  • I ended up paying around $450 for mine in 2006, my insurance didn't cover much of anything but the amount did go towards my deductible (And I had flex $ to use by year end so it worked for me). $1000 is a hefty amount all at once, but like pp said that is less that $20 a month which could be comparable to what BCP are - and the hassle of remembering to take a pill everyday!

I guess there is a payment plan now too. And like you said, probably makes up for the $ spent on BC. Think I'm gonna try to get it soon, I defiantly don't wanta wait til next year, if it was like $10,000 then yes but it doesn't sound too bad

  • I have the copper one, and I paid under $100 for it.  1000 seems a bit steep
  • I paid $600 for mine about 3 years ago and it's been worth every penny. I eventually stopped having my period, so that's another hassle that it takes care of. My advice is if you can make it work financially it's worth doing it.
