I feel like since we're in TX, we need to experience texas "things." the rodeo is coming into town, has anyone ever been? is this something you think is worth going?

ETA: not necessarily sure if I'm interested in an actual rodeo, I'm thinking it would be fun to walk around, eat some bad-for-me food, and people watch.

I've lived in Austin most of my life, and have never been.
However, it has come to my attention that there will be a capuchin monkey dressed like a cowboy, riding a sheltie dog like a horse. That's right, a tiny MONKEY riding a DOG like a HORSE.
Can you, in good conscience, say no to that??
I can not!! I may have to be carried away from the Cowboy Monkey ring.

Go Google rodeos and animal cruelty, read some literature from both sides, then decide.
My personal opinion is that rodeos are a cruel form of animal entertainment. I understand many people do not feel this way and that's super for them.
ETA: Even if you (the collective "you") are not participating in the animal shows, spending money at the rodeo, unless it is for some other charitable cause, is still supporting all aspects of the rodeo.
I come from a rodeo family, and have been on both sides of the arena so I can tell you that this is not the standard, especially in smaller rodeos. I can't speak for the carnival shows and such, but I know that there are strict guidelines the rodeo has to follow to assure that animals avoid injury. If there ever were evidence that the Austin rodeo didn't adhere to the guidelines then I wouldn't go.
We usually go to watch a performance but don't care for the rodeo part. The corn and funnel cake is what I like most.
Miss you lady!!!
I'm not trying to change anyone's minds about animal cruelty at the rodeo, to each their own.
My opinion, though, is that I love animals, and it upsets me terribly to see them mistreated. Heck, I cried Saturday the dog "Rescue Rally" because I couldn't save all the dogs.
However, I also love a good night at the rodeo
If you haven't been - GO! It's so much fun. You probably won't want to sit through the whole rodeo, but go see a little bit of it. The bull riding, barrel racing, etc. Hmm maybe not that calf catching (what's it called?). Haha, anyways ... it really is fun to experience. I haven't been in years, but used to go every year with my dad.
See a little bit of the rodeo, see a concert if you want to, people watch, browse all the booths, ride some rides, for the love of all things rodeo - EAT A FUNNEL CAKE!
I volunteer for one of the Rodeo committes and love going.
Defiantly go to the cook off next weekend if your not sure what to do. You donate a few dollars to each cookoff committee and you get free beer and free bbq for the ones you donate to. It's a lot of fun and you get to try several different types of bbq.
this definitely crossed my mind, something to think about for sure.
I grew up in Houston attending the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo every year, so the Austin rodeo gets a bit of a "meh" reaction from me.

The Austin Rodeo is also a major event for students in FFA and 4H. Those students compete and earn scholarships that send them to college. You can still attend the fair and not pay money to see the rodeo events if you feel that would be contributing to the "cruelty of rodeo animals."
Will you marry me!?
That seems to qualify as a charitable cause. Clearly FFA and 4H kids aren't out to hurt animals. I'm not unfamiliar with the organizations, nor am I ignorant of the good they do for the students and the animals.
Look, I'm not trying to convince people not to go. I don't see anything wrong with educating yourself on an event/organization prior to supporting it. I gave my opinion on the matter, so did others.
I'm sorry, MrsRosie. I just realized that my post (with your post quoted) looked like I was trying to pick on you. I wasn't.
I was trying to give context to my response (and I kind of failed there.)
I fully appreciate your comments on animal cruelty. I was trying to also point out the charitable/scholarship portion of the fair to present an up side to the whole thing. I hope you'll accept my apology. I certainly respect your opinion.
Bully! j/k No worries and thank you.
I can't have anyone thinking I'm screwing over the 4Hers. I had a middle school farmboy boyfriend who was heavily involved in 4H. He was my boyfriend until he insisted I visit his uncle's barn while his uncle happened to be artificially inseminating a cow. Have you ever seen shoulder-length gloves?
Only on Dirty Jobs! Ewww!!!
