Cell phones and data plans

Do you have a data plan on your cell, and do you use it?

Most phones seem to be smart phones, Iphones, android, etc.....all capable of email, internet, GPS, etc.

We both have it, and pay an additional $15 per month per phone for this service with Sprint (we don't have the higher phones that require the "everything plan" at $130 for 2).

But do I really need it? There is never any email that won't be able to wait until I get home. Sure, browsing the web while waiting for something/appt is fun....be needed? We have a tomtom so we don't need that feature on phones.

Am I missing anything? We text and send pics of the boy, and make actual calls....that's about it!

Thoughts?

Re: Cell phones and data plans

  • I had a phone without internet until about 6 months ago.. and now that I have it, i don't know how I ever lived without it. :) with my phone the data plan was optional and only $10 extra a month..

The catch is if you DON'T have the data plan and decide to use the internet for something the fees are crazy high.. So if you really don't think you'll want to use it.. then skip it.. but I love it.. (I can check the  nest and FB from work now.. whoo hoo)

  • I have an older, simple phone. Even doing txt on it is a pain.

We have an iPhone at work that we pass around to use for on call, and for me, while I don't NEED it, it would make my life a lot better if I could get a phone with internet that's mine - email, maps, google, facebook, text messaging, camera and phone.

I'm sending email all the time for work though - and having to log into servers or check websites for work. And I always get lost, so the google maps function on the iPhone saved me more than once. When I was in Macy's once trying to check out, the cashier couldn't figure out how to take something off of my BIL's wedding registry even though I had printed out the list in the store. I ended up logging on to the macys web site on the iPhone to get some other number that she needed off the registry that didn't print out on the sheets.

Our problem is that DH and I have fallen in love with the iPhone, but we have no ATT service at our house. We don't want to switch from Verizon since they do have better coverage. I'm looking at the Droid, but it's still no iPhone, so I've been hemming and hawing about what to get instead.

  • DH and I have iPhones and can't live without them.  We had the Blackberry's with Verizon and switching to the iPhones was the best choice.  Our primary email usage is for work but online capability has been a life saver for maps, googling, passing time when we're waiting for appointments and keeping our son occupied when he's being fussy while we're out.

  • We both have iPhones and love them. However, we really need them for our jobs. The bill is high, about $159 per month. I would say though, if you don't need it, then don't get it. There are some days when i just want to throw my phone because i can't get away from emails, etc. But.. it is the nature of the beast. ;-)
  • I didn't have it until I got my Blackberry. Until then, I didn't see the point because my phone was pretty basic. The only extra feature I had was texting. Now I use all of the services on the everything plan, because I have the technology that makes it easy to access.
  • I have an iPhone, and spend about $30/mo on the data plan for it.  DH has a work Blackberry, so he has a smartphone too, we just don't pay for it.

Having the data plan means I don't have to pay for texting, because we can email each other for free during the day (useful when he's in court and can't answer the phone -- which is often).  I wouldn't get it just for that, but between that and the other features I really, really enjoy having it.  It also combines iPod and phone into one device to carry.

I probably wouldn't have spent the money on myself, though.  DH got it for me for Christmas a year and change ago.  My firm provides support for smartphones but doesn't pay for them for us -- it makes my world go round to have access to my work email away from a computer.
