what do i do??

Yesterday I got a call from an elem. school. They want to interview me on Monday for a 3rd grade position that starts April 4 until the end of the year. Apparently, the full-time teacher is leaving. This would be GREAT because I could gain experience and they might keep me for the upcoming school year. Plus, the county pays well!

30 minutes later I got a call from a tutoring place that I had submitted my resume into. I called them back and set up an interview for Monday afternoon. Should I tell them that there's a chance I might be taking a full-time position, or just wait until they offer me the job and I know for sure if I got the other job or not? This job wouldnt pay as much.

THEN, this morning another tutoring company called me that I had given my resume to and they want to set up an interview. I feel like if I go to these interviews I should tell them there's a chance I might not be able to do it. Should I? Mom says I shouldnt tell them anything and act like I would take it, until I know for sure about the 3rd grade job. I have never had this happen and I just dont want to lie to people!

  • I agree with your mom. You might not get the elementary position (although I've got my fingers crossed for you!), so you wouldn't want to already put yourself at a disadvantage for the other positions. Aren't there very few teaching positions in FL right now?

I would go to the interviews, be excited about all of them, and worry about what to say after you have 3 offers! Good luck!

  • Listen to your mom. :)

You don't know how things are going to pan out, so as far as you know, all of these jobs are possibilities.  Just because a job looks like a sure thing or best opportunity doesn't mean it is.  As far as job interviewing goes, companies realize without you ever saying anything that even if they offer you a job, you may turn it down.  If you're looking for a job, competition is kind of a given.

Keep your mouth shut and your game face on!  Go get 'em!

  • ok!! I guess mamacita is right. I just hate to be "mean" and turn them down after I acted so excited!! I guess that's how it goes though in the interviewing world. I have never had this happen before. Do you think its ok for me to ask what the salary is for both tutoring jobs if they dont bring it up? If the 3rd grade job doesnt work out, I would want to pick the job that pays better.

  • Definitely ask about the salary! And benefits package if there is one. It will help you make a better decision.
  • Listen to your mom!! And the PPs! Definitely don't tell them anything about your other interview.

It's very common when interviewing for jobs to be weighing your options and going on more than just one interview. If you tell them at the interview that you may not take the job, they won't take you as seriously and your chances probably be reduced. And then what if you don't get the teaching job or the tutoring job?

And a job offer is just that- an OFFER, not a subpoena, you should not feel bad about turning it down at all. You have to do what's best for YOU and that means doing your best at both interviews and having all the options you can.

  • And yes, definitely ask about the salary!
  • Schedule and go to all 3 interviews,  do not accept a position on the spot (unless it is the elem position) and do not tell them you have other interviews/other possible positions.  Good Luck! Big Smile
  • Don't worry about being mean, Everyone knows that when you're looking for a job you might get more than one offer and someone else's offer could be better than theirs.  They won't feel personally offended by it and someone else will be happy to take the job you didn't.
  • I'm going to disagree slightly with the salary thing based on what I've encountered working Career Services.  It's usually considered proper to wait for them to bring up the salary/benefits, which could happen during the interview or the time of the offer.  That doesn't mean that you absolutely shouldn't ask first, but just keep that in mind.

If you get an offer for one and you get the salary/benefit information from them without having anything to compare it to, tell them you would like to consider their offer/talk it over with the family, etc., and will get back to them in a few days (i.e. less than a week).  That will give the other places time to get back to you, and perhaps you could play the game of counter-offers.

BTW, check out the 9-5 board.  They're a great resource.  There's always lots of interview/salary questions on there.

  • Just seconding (thirding...tenthing?) what the other ladies have said. Definitely don't say anything about the other positions and weigh out all your options!

How exciting! My fingers are crossed for you.

  • Thanks for all the advice! I have never been to the 9-5 board but I might go check it out. Hopefully, they will mention the salary to me when I interview. I am so excited, I need some moola! lol

  • Back in the days of good economies, I would advise you to let them know that you're doing lots of interviewing...that's always the position I took. They'd ask if I had any other offers and I'd say that I was actively interviewing and looking for the right fit.

These days, interview as if it's your best offer. Once you secure the teaching job, then you can let the others know. That's just my 2 cents.

  • I agree...don't tell them anything. I am jealous btw...I have been looking for a teaching job for forever! I subbed last year and took a Universal PreK position this year. I think I will go back to subbing in September....but every morning I am telling myself by September I WILL have a job. Over half the people in my grad classes are jobless...and I only know of 3 people (out of 60) that I graduated undergrad with that have teaching jobs. 2 of those 3 moved to NC.
