The MTA must be the most inept organization in the world

Watching the news, hearing that the MTA has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on subway security cameras (to replace station workers) and they don't work, and there's no spending end in sight.

I am constantly staggered by the non-productive spending by the MTA.  It seems like every project they undertake goes wildly over budget and deadline (by hundreds of million/billions of dollars)

It seems like the best way to fix the MTA budget would be to get rid of everyone that doesn't operate or fix an actual train and rebuild the organization from there.

 Rant over!

  • you're preaching to the choir that is my husband and i. and having had to pay more for our monthly metrocards as service only gets worse and worse just infuriates us more. i will not miss the mta one little bit!!

  • I also can't believe their lack of responsibility in budgeting as well as their ineptness.  I am always angered by it.  I think we should be able to vote for the person who runs our public transportation system.  At least that way, we, the PUBLIC, has a say in what happens and where our $$$ goes.

I also think that the public should hold a mass strike of the MTA and either a) all jump the turnstiles (they can't arrest everyone) or b) not take the subway for a whole day.  Let them see what they would be missing without a supportive public.

  • the best way to fix it would be to privatize it, but that won't happen.  gov't run entities just don't seem to work very smoothly or spend money wisely imo.  they just aren't held accountable for their ineptness.

there is no way that nyers could quit using the subway though.  jumping the turnstiles, now that is interesting :)

one thing i do to try to screw them over (lol) is that there are always a lot of people waiting by the turnstiles to get a free swipe from people with unlimited monthly cards as they come out, i gladly always give those people a free swipe of my card, hehe

  • Don't even get me started on the MTA.  I pay $11 A DAY in tolls just to drive over ONE bridge to get to work.  And I drive myself and pay for my own gas - it's not like the MTA magically transports me over the bridge!  They make me pay $5.50 each way to drive myself a mile over their dilapidated bridges, which have had "construction" going on since I started law school in 2003 (I'm talking both the Whitestone and Throggs Neck).  I can't even think about how much I pay monthly in tolls because it makes me sick.  If they raise tolls one more time, I either need a raise or I need to start working from home because I can't afford it.

They are the most wasteful, inept and corrupt government agency.  I want Bloomberg to take them over and use some of his money management genius to figure out what the he!! is going on and fix it, starting by getting rid of everyone who is in currently in charge.

  • Yes, it's amazing how little accountability there is on the part of the MTA.  Didn't Bloomberg or Patterson appoint a person to review the MTA?  With state monies going to fund all their overpriced, overbudget endeavors you would think that would be the smart thing to do.  Okay, we will give you some tax money, but we want to know that you are spending it well and efficiently.
